PLEASANT POINT

FARM SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The first annual meeting of the Farm Committee was held at the Town Hah. Mr A. H. Roberts was In the chair, and other members present were Messrs A. K. Easterbrook (secretary),T. Kelllher, M. Maze, J. Chapman, C. Chapman, B. Wooff- fin, F. Agnew, W. Halkett, L. Rendall, J. J. McGuigan and R. Kingston. The secretary read a report on the year’s operations, stating that when all the crops were disposed of there should be a credit balance of atiout £IOO. The chairman, reviewing the year’s work, said that, owing to the dirty state of the farm when taken over, the committee had concentrated on cleaning the ground and establishing a fund to work on. He considered that they could congratulate themselves on having, In a very large measure, succeeded. With a working fund established, he thought that much more In the experimental nature could be undertaken this year. He thanked members for the support accorded, and expressed the opinion that the office of chairman should go round. Members were unanimous that Mr Roberts should carry on for a further term, and he was re-elected chairman. Mr Easterbrook was re-elected secretary. Mr McGuigan, as headmaster, asked for more intimate touch between the staff and the Farm Committee. He would like to know in advance more of what work was contemplated. The chairman said that It had been Impossible to do much in the past year, but if the headmaster would give a lead as to what was wanted, he had no doubt that the committee would endeavour to meet him. In his opinion t i of the great things in successful practical farming, was to try and anticipate the future markets, rather than concentrate on a laid-own principle of rotational crops. A large measure of commonsense and thinking ahead was a farmers’ best standby. It was agreed to undertake experimental work with Tuscan wheat, grasses, and turnips during the ciming season.

The chairman advocated the appointment of two visitors per month, who would have administrative powers for the month of their appointment. This would lessen the chairman’s work and give each member a more intimate touch with the work of the farm.—lt was agreed to adopt the idea, and Messrs Maze, and Agnew were appointed visitors for June. It was agreed to dispose of the mangolds at per load on the ground. The chairman intimated that Dr Hilgendorf had promised to give an address to farmers, under the auspices of the committee, in the near future. The secretary said that Mr T. D. Burnett was endeavouring to get Mr Wilde, Principal of the Fellding Agricultural Farm, to give an address.

Further routine business was transacted and the meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chairman.

DENTAL CLINIC. With the object of giving School Committees, in the Pleasant Point SubCentre, an insight of dental clinic matters. a meeting was held in the school on Thursday night, when the following delegates were present:—Mr Gillingham (Cave), Mr Giles (Totara Valley), Mr J. Dossett (Convent), Messrs Gould and McPherson (Rockwood), Mr Driscoll (Kerrytown), Mr A. Watson (Waitohi), Mr Obom, Dr Benham (Pleasant Point), and the secretary, Mr W. Halkett. Nurse Robertson was also present by invitation. After welcoming the delegates, the chairman (Mr W. B. Obom), explained the position, concerning each school affected. The nurse was asked several questions ' regarding fees, treatment, etc. A letter, relating to the procedure adopted by the Fairlie Dental Clinic Committee, was received from the secretary, explaining the position as affecting Fairlie. After a round table discussion, it 1 was moved by Mr Gillingham, “That a Dental Clinic Committee be formed of representatives of each school in the Pleasant Point Sub-Centre, such committee to be formed at a further meeting to be held in September.’’ This was seconded by Dr Benham, and carried. In thanking delegates for their interest shown, the chairman said it was quite possible that the new dental clinic question might be finalised by the next meeting.
