SOUTH CANTERBURY HUNT

MEET AT SUTTON ROAD. The South Canterbury hounds met at Sutton Road on the King’s birthday. June 3rd. The holiday, and the excellent hunting prospects, were jointly responsible for producing a

large field. The day opened well with a very pretty run of perhaps two and a half miles. Hounds were cast off m Mr Stericker’s and a hare was soon away. The pack hunted very well, on a good strong scent, holding well together, and with plenty of music, till they over-ran their- line by a plantation close to Mr Stericker’s. After a short check they picked the line up once more, and ran at a good pace back to the road and across into Mr Dale’s Their quarry now grew cunning. She ran a quick half-circle back to the road dodged down the road for a short distance, and then laid up in a patch of gorse. Hounds were puzzled here for some time. The hare was then viewed sneaking away through Mr Dale s, where she laid up again in a gorse hedge, but the pack were unable to dislodge her. An over-supply of hares all of which refused to be pushed out of their home in a large paddock of long grass, tended to spoil sport for the rest of the morning. In the afternoon there was quite a good run over the properties of Messrs Dale, Burrell and Dussy, but scent did not come up to expectations, and hounds were unable to kill. Although, from a purely hunting point of view, the day was not quite so good as might have been expected, there were plenty of rasping great gorse fences to be jumped, and spectators were able to see some good jumping. .
