MAIN SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Main School Committee was held last night. Present: Messrs A. Carnegie (chairman), W. J. Castles (hon. secretary), A. Dephoff, F. R. Dennison, R. G. Moffatt, T. G. Malcolmson, C. Lund and J. H. Harley. Headmaster’s Report. The headmaster (Mr W. W. Garton), reported that since school resumed after the term holidays broken weather and colds had not been conducive to good attendances. During this time nine boys and twelve girls had been enrolled, and ten boys and ten girls had been struck off, the roll now standing at 272 boys and 264 girls. The average daily attendance for each week had been 500 and 496.3, or P 3 per cent, and 02.3 per cent, of the possible. The large number of withdrawals had been due to people leaving the district. Misses Boucher and Mason finished their duties on May sth, and had been replaced by Misses Durring and Hassall. Children who had their lunch at school were again receiving a cup of cocoa, a supply of cocoa having been given by Mr Harley. Thanks were due to Mr Dephoff for presenting two historical pictures to the school.
Messrs Karley and Dephoff thanked for their gifts.
General.
The visitors for the month, Messrs Harley and Moffatt, reported that everything was working smoothly at the school. Several minor requests were recommended for attention.
Mr Moffatt spoke in complimentary terms of the appearance of the school grounds. The bugle band seemed to be improving every day, and the standard of marching by the children was very high. Mrs C. Head forwarded the financial statement of the recent variety entertainment held in the Scottish Hall, in aid of the school bugle band, a profit of £7 8s 7d being shown. The chairman said that the entertainment had been very successful, and thanks were due to Mrs Head for her enthusiastic efforts on behalf of the school.
The Main School Old Boys’ Association forwarded a donation of £1 Is towards the school dental clinic. The continued interest of the Association in the welfare of the School was referred to by the chairman, and the old boys were thanked for their donation.
The Takaina Company of Girl Guides were granted the use of the school basketball courts on Saturday afternoons.
The chairman said that the dental clinic contributions had been very disappointing, and unless something more satisfactory was arrived at, it appeared that the dental treatment would have to go.
It was agreed to again circularise parents on the subject. The chairman and Mr J. W. Preen were appointed delegates to the South Canterbury School Committees’ Association.
Following a suggestion by Mr Castles, It was decided that the matter of procuring merit certificates for distribution at the end of the year, be held over till next meeting. Accounts, amounting to £l3 17s 9d, were passed for payment.
