FORETOLD BY FISH
WARNING OF COMTNG OF EARTHQUAKES. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph -Copyright VANCOUVER. June 6. Addressing the Science Congress. Dr. Shinkishi Haitai, of the Japanese Imperial University, said fish foretell earthquakes, and respond to the human | voice by coming close to the surface. Describing the experiment of fore- ' casting earthquakes by determining the reaction to a knock on a table of catfish, Dr. Haitai said it was concluded that catfish became sensitive to the knocking sound seven or eight hours before an earthquake was recorded. The experiment was successful in 80 per cent, of the trials. The sort of disturbance the catfish feels prior to an earthquake was yet uncertain, though a sudden alteration of the earth current appears to be at least one of the factors. During several days prior to the Kevanto earthquake, fish refused baited hooks in the entire Saga mi Bay. A similar phenomenon was noticed in Tango Bay prior to an earthquake.
