A crowded holiday train last night sped for miles between Paris and Montereau uncontrolled, after the driver and fireman had perished. A shower of sparks from the firebox ignited the clothes of the crew. The agonised driver jumped from the engine and was killed instantly. The fireman attempted to stop the train, but collapsed. The guard, noticing the uneven running of the train, clambered into the engine and stopped the train. He found the fireman like a blazing torch.
