Mr C. E. Pethybridge, Christchurch, is staying at the Grand. A motion of sympathy to Mr T. Gunnion, ex-Mayor of Temuka, in his illness, was carried at the monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Council yesterday. Four members of the inspectoral staff of the Canterbury Education Board, Messrs A. McNeill, J. WynIrwin, F. A. Bates, and J. P. Hawke, are on an official visit to the schools of South Canterbury. The Acting-Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, received deputations .at Auckland yesterday. He visited the base at Devonport at noon, and cValt with further public business in tue afternoon. He left in the evening for Wellington by the Limited express. In moving at the meeting on Monday after noon of the committee of the CanU rbury Pilgrims’ and Early Settlers’ Association:—“That the congratulations of the association be conveyed .to Sir Hugh Acland on the honour conferred on him by his Majesty the King,” the chairman (Mr E. R. Webb) said that in the early years of .the association. Sir Hugh Acland had" been a frequent contributor of items ftt the gatherings of the association, and took a great interest in the association. He was a member of one of .the oldest Canterbury families, and .thoroughly deserved the title conferred on him. The motion was carried by av'-cclamation.
