MOTOR VEHICLES

TIMARU REGISTRATIONS TO DATE. The following table gives the total number of motor vehicles registered in Timaru to date this year, the figures for the corresponding period last year being shown also:— 1933-34 1932-33 Motor-cars .. .. 1382 1391 Motor-cycles 206 226 Other registrations . 437 446 2025 2063 It is understood that there were approximately 850 vehicles of different types registered last year for which new plates have not yet been obtained. Motor drivers’ licenses are two or three ahead of the number issued at this time last year, 1263 renewals having been made. Speaking to Traffic Inspector Newcome yesterday, a representative of “The Timaru Herald” w r as told that advice had been received that several vehicles bearing last year’s registration numbers' had been seen in various parts of the borough at night. In view of the fact that the owners of the vehicles wene not covered under the compulsory insurance scheme until reregistration took place, any person violating one of the most important provisions of the Act would, no doubt, be severely dealt with. Inspector Newcome pointed out that the police were co-operating with the borough traffic department at nights, and it was expected that as a result of united effort, traffic breaches would be greatly minimised.
