EUCHRE TOURNEY. There was a good attendance at Saturday night's euchre tournament. ] The prizes were won by Mrs E. Shea . ancl Mr G. H. Smith. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs A. Hadler and Mr C. Smith. LADIES' GUILD. An enjoyable social evening, organ- ' ised by the Anglican Ladies’ Guild, was held in the Public Hall on Friday evening. There was a fairly good attendance. This was followed by a concert of songs and dances, the following programme being presented:—Song, Miss F. Lynch; sailors' hornpipe, Sylvia Woodham; clog dance. All the items i were applauded, encores being accorded in every case. After the concert, Rev. J. Hay, on behalf of the Guild, thanked the performers. and also Mrs Strang who had arranged the programme. The concert was followed by a dance which was continued until a late hour. Music was supplied by Mrs H. L. Wimsett, Miss Lois Dellow, Mr J. F. Turpie and Mr A. H. Dellow. During the evening good business was done at sweets and work stalls. A sheep guessing competition was won by Mr L. Galletly, Mr S. Rogers and Mr Alan Woods also winning prizes. RESIDENTS’ MEETING. A meeting of residents interested in the affairs of the cemetery, the Domain, and the Public Hall was held in the Library on Monday night. Contrasting with the experience of many previous years there was a very good attendance. Mr A. H. Dellow presided. The Cemetery Board balance sheet showed a credit balance of £155 15s 9d. Recommendations that the oval be fenced, and that a water tank be installed, were carried. The Domain Board accounts showed a credit balance of £sl 4s sd. a reduction of £8 11s 4d on last year's balance. The Hall Committeee statement showed that the expenditure for the year was £69 11s 6d, and the receipts £7O 17s lid. The accounts showed a credit balance of £2 17s 6d. The chairman reported upon the three bodies as follows;—“The cemetery is the one body not affected by the slump. Its income is assured. In the Domain improvements have been made during the year. A new roundabout has been provided for the children, and shrubs have been planted. . The income of the Domain, however, has fallen. In the past the grazing had been let at a very satisfactory figure, but lately conditions have been unfavourable for securing this return. Concerning the hall, a year ago two things seemed to be necessary: To reduce the hall charges and to improve the hall. There was a feeling that the hall was not as convenient as it might be, and this was very true. When the pioneers of this district were able to build the hall in their day at very great expense, it would indeed be disgraceful if this generation could not keep it up-to-date and in good repair. The year started with a debit balance, but in spite of this the Committee went ahead with a programme of improvements and the following things were done, A fireplace was built in _ the Library. Cold water was installed over the copper and the kitchen sink. In addition the whole of the Library has been renovated, and other minor repairs carried out. These improvements cost money, and to help pay for them euchre tournaments were organised last year. The result was disappointing. Another function was promoted, but this in common with every other function over recent years in aid of the hall funds was not well attended. This year, however, the euchre parties have been more successful, and because also the hall has been better patronised of late, the funds now show a credit balance. However, there are still many improvements to be made. The inside of the kitchen is unfinished, and the ladies’ cloak room is like a barn. The hall needs repainting. The piano also needs attention. The Hall Committee to be elected to-night will probably attend to some of these items in the next few months if funds permit. The public generally had not been intererted in the hall to a great extent, but should any public spirited citizen care to assist by donating prizes for the euchre parties or in any other way, such help would be greatly appreciated. The Committee is indebted to the Dramatic Club for improvements to the stage, which previously was unsightly. Thanks are due also to Mrs W. E. Mills whe painted two splendid pieces of scenery From nine nominations, the following Committee was elected:—Messrs D. M, France, L. A. O'Loughlin, A. H Dellow, C. F. Dix, G. A. Wilkes, R, L Pugh and E. J. Dash. At a meeting of the Committee following the public meeting, Mr G. A. Wilkes was elected chairman. The question of street lighting was gj discussed at length, and the position ■ of the county was explained by Mr J I J. Dickson, member for the riding. A I vote of thanks to Mr Dickson for his ■ attendance was carried by acclamation
