HELPING OUT FEED POSITION
SECURING ADVANTAGE OF RECENT RAIN. It is generally agreed that in no previous year has Canterbury faced so serious a shortage of feed for stock as as the case this season. Fortunately, on many farms, there arc supplies of oats and chaff, and in some cases other dry feeds on hand, which will help the i>osition materially. However, experience has shown that depending on such feeds alone is not altogether satisfactory. Where it can be obtained. a supply, even a limited one. of green grass or green-feed oats, will be of invaluable assistance to farmers in helping over the next few months. The problem, however, that many are facing, is that the long spell of dry weather has burnt up such crops. There is also a fear that when heavy rain does come the weather will then be too cold for a satisfactory growth to take place. This may be true under normal conditions, but recent research work has shown that by using a suitable top-dressing on pastures and green-feed crops, these can be greatly stimulated even in the colder months of the autumn.
