FAIRLIE
UNEMPLOYED RELIEF. A meeting of the Unemployed Relief Committee was held in the Council Chambers, Fairlie. Present—Messrs W. Scott (chairman), C. J. Talbot, F. J. Carter, J. Caskey, W. Close, W. P. Hope and G. T. Nelson. The chairman gave a resume of the year’s work, and pointed out that indications were for an increased number of unemployed during this winter. He mentioned that the sum of £2236 had been given in the district during the year. Three camps had been in operation, and all had been most successful.
On the motion of Messrs Talbot and Close, a vote of thanks was recorded for the services of Mr Hope and the secretary during the year. A telegram was received by the Committee asking if it was possible for the Committee to establish a further camp for the unemployed.— On the motion of Messrs Talbot and Carter, it was decided to recommend to the Council to go into the matter of establishing a further camp. On the motion of Messrs Close and Nelson, it was decided that a letter be sent to the Council asking that the work at Ashwiek plantation be continued as long as possible. Also, it was decided on the motion of Messrs Talbot and Nelson, that the matter of recommending the camp be left to the secretary and Mr Hope. A letter from Mr Roundhill re allocations was received.
In closing the meeting, the chairman remarked that this was the last meeting of the Committee. He thanked them for their co-operation and trusted that all would be available for the following year if nominated to the Committee.
