WALLACETOWN TRAGEDY
BODIES RECOVERED. By Telegraph—Press Association INVERCARGILL, Mav 7. Despite strenuous efforts to lift Mr Milne’s car from the Makarewa river at Wallacetown, it was 3 o’clock on Saturday morning before the bodies of two victims—Mrs Milne and her daughter Belle—were recovered. The third victim, Jean Somerville, was found in the afternoon, several miles below the bridge where the car crashed. The Driver's Story. Mr Frank Milne is an experienced driver and knows the road well. He states that the tragedy could not have happened if the railing had been sound. “I don’t know how I got out of the car. I think I must have been jerked backwards through the window. For a moment I thought I could pull some of the others out, for the car seemed to stay near the edge. Then the current caught it and swept it farther out and into deep water.” The dangerous nature of the bridge was demonstrated this morning when a car travelling at 10 miles per hour skidded and nearly went over in the same place.
