Sympathy with Mr T. B. Garrick (chairman of the Levels County Council) in his illness, was expressed by the Mackenzie County Council at their meeting yesterday. At yesterday’s meeting of the Timaru-St, Andrews branch of the Farmers’ Union Mr R. B. Hart was elected a member of the Committee. Mr Hart was also appointed to represent the branch on the Timaru Unemployment Committee. The Mackenzie County Council at yesterday’s meeting passed a motion of congratulation to the Hon. John Bitchener on his elevation to Cabinet rank. The chairman (Mr C. J. Talbot) said that Mr Bitchener had had a wide experience in local body work, the outstanding features of the new Minister being practical commonsense and honesty. Reference to the death of Mr A. D. Mcßae, a well-known runholder of the district, was made at yesterday’s meeting of the Mackenzie County Council by the chairman (Mr J. C. Talbot). The late Mr Mcßae, said the chairman, was highly esteemed, his opinions on stock and station management being much valued. A motion of sympathy was carried with the relatives. A tribute to Mr George Harper as “one of the most noted citizens of Christchurch,” was paid at a meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, when it was decided to extend to him the chamber's heartiest congratulations on attaining his ninetieth birthday. Mr A. F. Wright, who presided, said that before he retired from active legal work Mr Harper had a very large commercial practice, which had brought him in close contact with members of the chamber over a long period of years. Several other members also expressed their appreciation of the great service Mr Harper had rendered the community.

Two popular members of the staff of the Timaru Boys’ High School were farewelled by the teachers and boys at the close of school yesterday. Mr T. K. R. Whitehouse, who was presented with a sterling silver cruet set, has been in Timaru for the past twelve years. Mr J, Allport is an old boy who has been teaching here for the past three years. He was the recipient of an inscribed wallet. Subsequently at a quiet function in the staff common room, the masters bade farewell to their retiring colleagues. Mr Whitehouse was presented with an oak chiming clock, and Mr Allport with an ebony walking-stick. The presentations on behalf of the boys were made by the head prefect, Rasmussen, and those on behalf of the staff by the Rector, Mr W. Thomas.

The Rev. Edwin T. Cox, who was elected Mayor of Dunedin, on Wednesday, is superintendent of the Momington Methodist Circuit. He was bom at Marton, in the North Island, and was educated at Prince Albert College in Auckland and the Auckland University College, where he paid special attention to economics and philosophy, and graduated with first-class honours in history. He entered the ministry 25 years ago in Auckland, and served for six years as superintendent of the Auckland Central Mission, the services being held for the last three of those years in the Strand Theatre, which was then the largest theatre in the city. For the next eight years he was in charge of the Central Church at Wanganui, where he occupied the office of president of the Young Men’s Christian Association for three years. He was also great chief of the Wanganui Savage Club. He has been in Dunedin for four years.
