ALLEGATION DENIED.
To the Editor of “ The Timarv. Herald’.* Sir, —Although much against the inclination of the members of the Benevolent Guild to rush into print, it is impossible to allow an inaccurate statement to remain unchallenged. In “The Timaru Herald” of Monday, April 3rd, we saw that, at a meeting for arranging relief, a Mr Stevenson was reported to have said that "This organisation had refused to supply meat to one man as he belonged to a certain denomination.” We do not know if he (Mr Stevenson) referred to the Benevolent Guild; if so, no man was ever refused meat or anything else on account of his religion. We think that after over thirty-two years’ work, the Benevolent Guild is well enough known in th'e Geraldine district as entirely non-denominational, and is not attached to any particular Church. We would like here to say that the meat we distributed last winter was not relief meat, but was given by three private people to the Benevolent Guild to be distributed as the members thought best. It is due to these generous people to say that their wishes were carried out, and the meat was given to needy cases as far as possible in the following order:—Where there was sickness, where there was a growing family, or old people.—We are. etc., M. HISLOP, M.8.E., J.P.. President Geraldine Benevolent Guild. ELIZABETH McLEAN. Secretary Geraldine Benevolent Guild.
