MAIN TRUNK LINE
CLEARING SLIPS. EXPRESSES GET THROUGH. By Telegraph—Press Association TAUMARUNUI, March 27. The main trunk line is now sufficiently clear to allow trains to get through, without the need of transhipping by buses, though a considerable amount of work has to be done still. At midnight the drivers of buses were instructed to be ready to transport passengers between Taumarunui and Kakahi. At 3.30 a.m. word came through that the Okahukura repair work was sufficiently advanced to allow the express from Auckland to go through, and she arrived at Taumarunui at 4.30 a.m. Just before she arrived, advice was received here that the repair work between Taumarunui and Kakahi had reached a stage when it was safe for trains to pass over the obstructions, and the bus drivers were notified at 4.15 a.m. that they would not be required. The express from Auckland, with 118 passengers, went south at 5.15 a.m., and the express from Wellington, with 150 passengers, arrived at Taumarunui at 8 a.m., leaving for Auckland at 8.25 a.m. The railway authorities worked tirelessly all day yesterday, and until the early hours of this morning. Their feat in clearing the line so expeditiously is meritorious.
