BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Timaru Borough Council was held last night. Present—The Mayor (Mr T. W. Eatterthwaite), Councillors G. Benstead, J. R. Hart, W. H. Hunt, C. H. Mason, H. J. Mathers, M. H. Richards, and F. B. Hawkey. Omnibus Committee. The Omnibus and Electric Power and Light Committee reported as follows: Petrol tax.—A letter was received from the secretary of the Municipal Association that there is not much prospect of exempting Municipal Transport services from this tax. A deputation waited on the Minister recently, but failed to obtain any concession. A letter also was received from the Minister of Transport regretting that there was no possibility of the recent increase in motor spirits tax being refunded in the case of motor spirits being used in municipality services. Price of petrol.—The general question of the price of petrol was left to be discussed at the conference to be called. The report was adopted. Finance Committee. The Finance Committee reported as follows: Penalty on unpaid rates.—Advice was received from the Under-Secretary. Department of Internal Affairs as to Clause 27 of the Finance Act which gave power for local bodies to remit the whole or any pert of the 10 per cent, on the rates, or to postpone the date of same. The Committee decided to support the proposals set forward in the Mayor's notice of motion to postpone the penalty date until 31st March. South Island Tourist League.—A letter was received from the interim secretary, inviting representatives to be present at. a meeting to be held in the Town Hall. Dunedin, to consider the proposals of the Committee regarding the formation of a League. Resolved to reply regretting the Council were unable to be represented at the meeting, and the matter of joining the League as an a affiliated member to he referred to the new Council. Street Day—An application from the Returned Soldiers’ Association for permission to hold a Poppy Day on Friday 21st April, was recommended for approval. The report was adopted. General Committee. The General Committee reported as follows: Ashbury Park—An application from the Zingari Football Club for the use of football ground in Ashbury Park was declined, on the curator's statement that the ground required topdressing this winter. Merry-go-Round.—An offer was considered from Mr J. Johnston, of Christchurch, to sell a merry-go-round and cliair-o-plane.—Resolved not to recommend the purchase. Labourers' and Drivers' AwardCopies of the draft award prepared by the Employees' Union were considered and recommended for execution by the Council. As regards the rats of pay for general la'.-ourers the Council recommends that the recommendation of its delegates that 1/71 an hour, as agreed to by the Union, should be approved by the Council, and also that Show Day and Easter Saturday, which are holidays for the drivers, should be holidays for the general labourers. Referring to the application of the Zingari Club, the Mayor said that the Club desired to know if they could have the use of Anzac Square, seeing that Ashbury Park was not available. The Club had i been up against it for some seasons, 'and he thought they should assist them if possible. The matter was left in the hands of the curator. The report was adopted. Conference To-Night. Councillors Benstead, Hunt and Mathers were appointed to represent the Council at a conference to be held to-night in connection with the Central Relief Society.
