SCENIC ATTRACTIONS

ADVERTISING TEMUKA. At its last meeting the Temuka Borough Council discussed a letter suggesting the formation of a South Island Tourist League, and inviting delegates to attend a meeting (which was held in Dunedin last week) for that purpose. The letter also asked that the attractions of the Temuka district be forwarded to the meeting. The Council appointed a committee consisting of the Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan), and Councillors E. Blackmore, and W. H. McMillan to confer with the Temuka Progress League. The combined meeting was held in the Council Chambers, the League being represented by Messrs A. N. Hancock (president), D. B. Muir, F. C. May, J. T. Smart, H. R. Woodham, and W. M. Hulston. The Town Clerk (Mr L. Durey) was in attendance. Mr Muir was appointed to represent the Temuka Borough at the conference, if it was possible for him to attend.

A rough draft of the district’s attractions was submitted, and, with minor alterations, approved. Temuka is situated 12 miles north of Timaru on the main trunk railway line. The district has a sunny climate and is notably healthy. Accommodation: There are five licensed hotels, also several private boarding houses. Transport: All trains stop at Temuka, and an abundance of cheap motor transport is available. Motor Camp: Temuka possesses an excellent motor camping ground in the Domain. Gas is laid on for cookiing, and sanitary drainage conveniences are connected, also a shower bath. It is well sheltered with belts of trees and is free from sand flies. Recreation Grounds: For lovers of sport there are tennis courts, a bowling green, a croquet green, and swimming baths in the Domain.

Angling: Trout fishing unequalled in New Zealand is available in Temuka. There are five rivers within a five mile radius of the town, that are well stocked with trout, namely the Temuka, Opihi, Rangitata, Orari and Waihi rivers.

Salmon fishing is available in both the Rangitata and Opihi rivers and fish as heavy as 36 pounds were caught this season.

Agriculture: Overseas visiting farmers and cadets will find the Temuka district exceedingly fertile and growers of fruit, grain, and root crops have won many prizes in the largest agricultural shows in both islands. Scenic Attractions: Peel Forest— Situated within 26 miles of Temuka, is a favourite camping ground and plenty of good fishing is available. Waihi Gorge—-An attractive picnic ground and a charming motor run is situated 18 miles from Temuka.

Orari Gorge—A popular picnic place situated 28 miles from Temuka.

Opihi Reserve—A scenic spot situated three miles from Temuka. Fishing huts provided. Hanging Rock—A pretty motor run and trout fishing available. Mount Cook, Lake Tekapo—Tourists bound for these parts may connect with the motor services from Temuka. Maori Folk Lore—The Maori history of the Temuka district is decidedly interesting for those who wish to delve into it. Important ceremonials of the Ngaiiahu tribe were at one time enacted on the motor camp site, and this place is associated with many ancient traditions.

The district possesses the largest Maori Pa in the South Island.
