SPORTING

OAMARU JOCKEY CLUB. RACING IN THE RAIN. There was an unexpected change in the weather for the second day of the Oamaru Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, and the races were run under conditions quite different from those ruling on Thursday, when the track was very hard and the atmo phere warm. Despite a high barometer, heavy rain fell in North Otago during the morning, and one or two members of the Club Committee were in favour of postponing (which was equivalent to abandoning) the programme. It was not until the full committee made an inspection of the track less than half an hour before the scheduled starting time that a definite decision to carry on was announced. Fears that a poor attendance would involve the Club in heavy loss, and that the track would prove unsafe, were soon dispelled. The attendance was quite up to the average, and the horses negotiated the turns more easily than many of them had done on the glassy grass on Thursday. The totalisator turnover for the day amounted to £7458/10/-, made up of £4005/10/- on the win totalisator, and £3*453 on the place machine. As a result the surplus shown on the opening day was enlarged, and the financial returns will be of a satisfactory character.

Assemble, whose Gardiner Memorial form pointed to success over a mile, won the President’s Handicap by a good margin, and Fair Weather, with Martian Chief out of the way, accounted for the open sprint handicap. The trotting events were won by Gunmetal and Sunny Ducrow, who were favourites on each day, but broke at the start on Thursday. Sunny Ducrow again misbehaved at the start, but pulled the race out of the fire by a fine exhibition of speed over the last half mile from an apparently hopeless position. The meeting concluded with the posting of a big dividend in lan’s March, who, assisted by a light weight, outpaced her opponents in the Farewell Handicap.

Fleeting Glance and Tea Garden Again Although his trainer did not like the track conditions, Rational 11. was the public choice each way for the Autumn Highweight. well clear in the bett'.ng of Juniper. Fleeting Glance, Tea Garden, Juniper and Thornton were first away, Sports King, from the outbeing last into the back stretch. Te& Garden, Morena, Thornton, Fleeting Glance and Sports King had drawn av/ay from the others at the far turn, and turning for home Tea Garden and Fleeting Glance were in charge. They fought out the finish. Fleeting Glance getting in the stride at the post to win by a head. Jun'.per was six lengths away, a couple of lengths ahead of Rational 11. The track conditions suited Fleeting Glance better than on the opening day. and she paid a nice dividend in the circumstances. A Runaway Win. Repudiation, a three-year-old sister to Caterp'llar, was made a shortpriced favourite for the Novice Stakes. On the win machine Imperial Spear was second choice and Gilpit third, while on the place totalisator Gilpit was second, June the Third third, and Imperial Spear fourth. Shepherd’s Delight was chopped out- at the start, and Sir Drake and Witch of Erin got away badly. June the Third and Repudiation were first to begin, from Leadham and Gilpit. and at the top the order was Repudiation, June the Third, Leadham, Gilpit and Errantry, the rest being some lengths away. Repudiation led Gilpit and Erranty into the straight, and over the final furlong she cleared out from the field, winning easing up by four lengths from Gilpit. Three lengths further back came Errantry, a head in front of Imperial Spear, who finished fast as he had done on the first day. Gunmetal Makes Amends. Gunmetal and Goldfield, who finished well after losing ground at the start on the opening day, were much better backed than the others for the Weston Trot. Goldfield, however, again broke just after the start and lost fully fifty yards before she again rettled to work. Ivan de Oro led up the straight the first time from Thornworthy and Happy Bird, and when the back stretch was reached Ivan de Oro, Thornworthy, Happy Bird, General Wrack and Gunmetal were fairly closely bunched, with Goldfield making up lost ground. Gunmetal went to the front after rounding the far turn, and led round the top from Ivan de Oro and General Wrack, wich Happy Bird and Thornworthy handy, and Goldfield just behind them. Gunmetal was first in line for home from Thorn worthy and Goldfield. Just when Goldfield looked a certainty for second place, she made another break and was not per evered with. Gunmetal won without difficulty by two lengths from Happy Bird, with Ivan de Oro three lengths off. half a length in front of General Wrack.

Assemble Takes Field Down. Martian Chief. Assemble and Ranelagh were entrusted with most of the money invested on the . President’s Handicap, but while Martian Chief was the place favourite. Assemble was No. 1 on the win machine. All began well except Ramo, who was on the outside. Wise Choice. Red Racer and Martian Chief ran in line for nearly a furlong, and at the six furlongs mark Red Racer, W se Choice, Martian Chief and Ranclagh were piloting the field. Wise Choice then lost her position and was sent back last. Red Racer. Ranelagh, Assemble and Martian Chief being left at the head of affair-. Rounding the bend Red Racer and Ranelagh were clear of Assemble and Martian Chief, but once the straight was reached Ranelagh was beaten. Assemble then raced to the front and drew away to win easily by three lengths from Red Racer. Mount Boa and Ramo came from the ruck and the Waimate gelding took third money, two lengths behind Red Racer. Ramo was half a length further back, just defeating Martian Chief. Kemal Pasha Unlucky. Denise (L. J. Ellis) wa 80 units ahead of Crash for a win in the Windsor Handicap, but for a place Crash had nine more supporters. Kemal Pasha and Gold Dress lost some lengths at the start, and Denise also was a bit . low to beg n. Shock led out from Crash and Brown Pearl, and they were still in charge at the far turn. There Some Good moved up. and with Shock carried on the running from Denise and Crash. Turning for home Shock. Some Good and Denise were the leaders, and once in line for home Brown Pearl moved up again. Shock shook off Denise and Some Good a furlong from home, and looked as if she would -win comfortably, but Kemal Pasha fini hed w.th a brilliant run and nearly surprised Shock out of first money. He was only a short head to the bad at the post, and was in front in another stride. Denise was about two lengths off, beating Some Good by half a length, and Brown Pearl was next. Had Kemal Pasha got off reasonably well he could scarcely have suffered defeat, and D. P. Wibon's stable would have done the hat trick.

Fair Weather Likes Rain. Hurlingham and Kerbside were a long way better backed than any of the others in the Stewards’ Handicap, and each was more heavily supported for a win than a place. Kerbside reverted to her old fractiousness at the barrier, and deservedly got the worst of the start, from which Silver Streak also was slow to begin. Fair Weather, Blue Metal, Lord Argosy and Hurlingham were the early leaders, but half way round the top Lord Argosy was done with, the front bunch comprising Fair Weather, Blue Metal, Hurlingham and Silver Streak. Fair Weather, Blue Metal, Hurlingham and Kerbside were first into the straight, and Fair Weather held his place to the post, winning by two lengths from Hurlingham. Silver Streak was a length away, a neck ahead of Blue Metal. Kerbside and Merry Feel were close up. Fair Weather was second on the first day. bn' he paced more convincingly on the soft track on Saturday. Sunny Ducrow’s Great Finish. The Dash Trot attracted only five starters—the smallest field seen in a harness race at Oamaru for many years. Sunny Ducrow and Lord Lupin were first and second favourites each way in a two-dividend race, but there was fair support for Black Jester and Doll Dance also. Once again Sunny Ducrow caused consternation to her backers by galloping off the mark, and she lost so much ground that she was regarded as out of the race. Black Jester began quickly and soon ran past Doll Dance, and Lord Lupin also went away rapidly, although he seemed to be slipping a bit on the wet track. Racing along the back Black Jester crept away from Doll Dance, who was well in advance of Lord Lupin, but Doll Dance gathered him in again at the far turn. Lord Lupin broke badly at the top of the bend and was passed by Sunny Ducrow, who was still nearly 30 yards behind the leading pair. Black Jester carried Doll Dance wide at the last turn, but was soon beaten by the Ashburton mare. Doll Dance appeared a certain winner half a furlong from home, but Sunny Ducrow commenced a brilliant run, and finishing strongly the filly caught the tired Doll Dance just on the post and beat her by half a length. Lord Lupin also came home very fast after his break and finished third, four lengths behind the first pair. Black Jester, who had just resumed work after a severe cold, was two lengths further back. Sunny Ducrow’s sensational run up the straight roused the crowd to enthusiasm, in which Lord Lupin’s run was overlooked. lan’s March Pays Big Dividend. Importance carried most money in the Farewell Handicap, her aggregate being 537 units, against 435 on Niggerhead and 434 on Amy Johnson, but she was not favourite on each machine. The order for a win was Importance, Amy Johnson, Niggerhead, and for a place Niggerhead, Importance, Amy Johnson. Amy Johnson and Lochard, who were disadvantaged by the draw, lost three or four lengths before they turned into the back, Dres y (from No. 1), Niggerhead and Falantua were first away, but they were soon joined by lan’s March, and after the far turn was negotiated lan’s March took command from Palantua. Niggerhead, Silver Streak and Rothen, and there was little change as they swung into the straight. lan’s March here had a lead of a couple of lengths, and giving her opponents no chance to get near her the Washdyke mare won decisively by that margin. Rothen finished well, and in a close content for second place beat Niggerhead by a neck- Palantua and Silver Streak were only necks further back. lan’s March, who was unlucky at the start on Thursday, was the outsider ,of the field, and paid over a quarter-century straight out, as well as a fine place dividend. Amy Johnson, who was surprisingly well backed in view' of her bad display on the first day, again fini-hed well back. Details are appended:—
