MAIN TRUNK LINE
REPAIRING THE BREACHES. ANOTHER LONG SLIP. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, March 25. The transhipment of passengers on the Main Trunk is still necessary. Sunday’s Limited from Auckland tomorrow will not leave till 11 p.m., and both the up and down Limiteds on Monday will be subject to several hours’ delay. Monday’s ordinary expresses are cancelled. Much of the country is very unstable and there were three particularly bad places. At the washout just north of Okahukura, where the Limited left the rails, the culvert is being replaced with a 25ft steel girder bridge. At the slip near the powerhouse a mile north of Piriaka a new road is being blasted round the edge of the papa rock in a search for a firm foundation to carry the main line. At the spot two miles north of Piriaka, where the express ran into soft ground, the ground gave further trouble yesterday, but it is expected to get the carriages across it on Monday or Tuesday. Other troublesome places have been sufficiently attended to to enable traffic to proceed at reduced speeds, and the weak places are being guarded night and day by the maintenance staff. Another slip occurred to-day on the line between Kakahi and Piriaka. It extends 200 yards along the line and will add to the delay in clearing the line, although it will not affect the present arrangements for the transport of express passengers between Auckland and Wellington.
