MORTGAGEES COMBINE

ASSOCIATION FORMED IN CHRISTCHURCH. By Teleeraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, January 18. The formation of a Mortgagees' Protection Association of New Zealand was the outcome of a largely attended meeting of mortgagees, solicitors, and businessmen held this afternoon. The Association will seek to organise mortgagees throughout the Dominion for protection of their interests, and will put their case before the Government in the event of any further proposals to limit their rights by legislation. One of the chief complaints, expressed at the meeting was the Government's action in enforcing payment of accrued land tax and rates after a property had come back on a mortgagee's hands. It was agreed to ask the Government to remove the mortgagee’s responsibility in this respect. The executive was authorised, if it thought fit, to send a deputation to Wellington, at an early date, to place the claims of mortgagees before the Government in the event of any further proposals to limit their rights, compared with the rights of stock mortgagees. It was agreed to communicate with similar interests in Auckland. Wellington and Dunedin, in order to extend tpe movement. _
