BOWLING

DOMINION TOURNAMENT. POST SECTION IN RINKS. HAWEHA WIN PAIRS. By Association WELLINGTON, January 18. Bright weathel', with some breeze, marked the continuation of the New Zealand bowling championships at Wellington to-day. The pairs championship was won by H. S. Maslin and M. J. Squire (Hawera), in a well-contested final against W. Brennan and C. Hardley (West End, Auckland), who won the event last year. Squire defeated Gordon (Seatoun) in a semi-final, and Hardley defeated Franks (Featherston). Good progress was made in the rinks in post section play. Three strong Wellington rinks are still in, and there is a good prospect of a Wellington rink winning the event. Before post section play was commenced, all bowlers reaching post section play were presented with medals provided by the president (Mr H. G. Mayer). The Pairs Decided. In the semi-finals of the pairs, Deas and Franks (Featherston) did not make too good a showing against Bremner and Hawley (Auckland), Franks giving away too many points. In the seventh head he played a running shot and took out his own bowls and left Hardley five. On the tenth head, Franks scored a useful four. Bremner and Hardley then showed real form and took command. Driving again at a later stage, Franks took out his own bowl, and with the next turned Hardley’s bowl in for the shot. On the I6th Franks drew two to one. After his lead had played, Hardley drove and missed the lot. In the last six heads the Aucklanders outplayed their opponents, adding 12 points to Featherston’s four, and winning 24-14. In the match Gordon (Seatoun) v. Squire (Hawera), there was more of fight. Squire went away up to the 13th head, but Seatoun put up a spirited contest, Squire not being out of the wood until the last head. Squire was leading 7-5 on the seventh, and scored 12 points to one on the next six heads. Seatoun scored nine on the next five heads, reducing the gap to four. Squire and Maslin drew for a single, and finally won 20-16. The final between Squire and Hardley was an excellent game, and was not decided until the last head. The Hawera men had wide drawing bowls, particularly the skip, and several times the spectators were astounded at the amount of green he took, yet he came right inside the head, often to get the shot. Squire started well. Maslin rested out Bremner's shot for two. Squire supported with a third, an ideal target for Hardley, who made a double miss. Next Bremner held the shot jack high, and Hardley drew another. Squire failed to run either off. The next five heads favoured Squire, who at the eighth head was leading 10-5. He played beautiful bowls. In the tenth Bremner had three bowls counting. Squire drove and took out one. Ha'rdley drew a fourth and another for five, with a measure for six. Squire drove and saved two, leaving Hardley four. Squire lost his head, driving three times when he could well have saved by drawing. He did not repeat it. In the next three or four heads Squire gave an exhibition of the drawing power of his bowls, often taking a yard to two yards more green than his opponents, to come round and run gently into the head. At the 16th head, Hawera led 17-11. Once more the made a fight, taking a three and a two. Bremner’s leading improved, but Squire was shading Hardley. At the finish of the 18th head, Hardley was only three down, but he allowed Squire to get away with two singles, and had to get five in the two heads to tie. In the next head, Squire rested Bremner’s wrong bowl in for shot. Wanting four to tie, Bremner placed two of his bowls In to count. Hardley drew two, and was lying four. Squire with his second bowl secured the third shot. Hardley killed the head, and on the replay Squire drew three lovely shots. Hardley drove out two. leaving Squire the shot and the game by 20-15. Trayes (Auckland) had the best of matters all the way with Gray (Kelburn) in the first round of post section play. Trayes’s rink played splendid bowls. Early in the game Trayes had a lucky drive and hit the jack, which ! rebounded, turning four down into two up. Edwards’s No. 3 in the Temuka rink drove the jack to the ditch, holding j the shot a foot away. Naylor (Lyall Bay) drew a beauty to. the brink to hold the second shot, beating Edwards for one. Kerr’s Onehunga rink was beaten by ; the superior play of Reid’s rink from i Lyall Bay. The latter showed great i team work, and inflicted the first de- ! feat on Kerr in the rinks. Hutchison (Dunedin) had a neck- \ and-neck race with Christiansen j (Palmerston North), who only lost on : the last head. The lead changed ' backwards and forwards. Feilding (Hataitai) should have won against Jenkin (Carlton), whose four ■ on the 18th head was fatal to Hataitai. : Feilding was lying three on the 20th Trustcott (No. 3) killed the head, and scored on the replay. Jenkin lay two on the last head, which was well guarded, and Feilding failed to upset it.

A six on the eighteenth head to Ives (Christchurch) against Priddle (Island Bay) won him the game. He did it with a beautiful trailer, and made the score 17-17. On the last head Jenkin’s No. 3 put the jack in the ditch for shot. Jenkin drew another, and Priddle failed to save and lost by one. Maxwell Walker found Tucker (Victoria) a tough proposition, but pulled off a win in the last two heads. Rendle had a great win over Lancaster (Carlton) by superior drawing and driving.

Later, Rendle beat Lowry (Petone), an ex-Carlton player, by a big margin. Wilson (Linwood) gave Smith (Kelburn) a great go. He was nine down at half-way, but came with a rush at the finish to lose by one. Wilson then lost to Arnott (Palmerston North) and went out.

Hollard (Putaruru), who was fancied somewhat, and whose rink has played good bowls, went out to Dee (Nelson) in the first round, and then lost his second life in the afternoon. Dee had a bowl taken off by the umpire for breaking the foot-on-mat rule after being warned.
