Although Royal Sceptre was scratched for the Wyndham, Waikouaiti and Southland meetings, he is still engaged at Oamaru. Indianapolis was nearly relieved of his engagement in the Great Northern Trotting Derby. Mr Barton and E. C. McDermott, who went north to drive Mr Barton’s horses, were in daily communication with W. J. Tomkinson regarding the colt’s condition, and as late as Wednesday night a lengthy telephone conversation ended in a doubt about Indianapolis going to the post. All depended on how he jogged on the morning of the race as to whether he would take his place in the field. Fortunately the lameness due to his being caught in a fence before leaving Christchurch had worn off, and he was geared up for the big contest, in which he was admirably handled by E. C. McDermott. Immediately after the race for the Winton Trotting Cup on Thursday, the president (Mr A. Baird) presented the handsome trophy attached to the event to R.
