Girvan and congratulated Mr Townley on being the trainer of such a good horse. Mr Baird handed over a case of cutlery to Mr Townley. Also attached to the event was a silver stopwatch, which was presented by a Balclutha sportswoman, Mrs W. R. McCormack. to the trainer of the winner. Mr J. O’Shannessey (vice-president) made the presentation and amid cheers the watch was handed to Mr R. Townley, who suitably expressed his thank'. Phar Lap’s mounted hide was recently exhibited in Sydney, and Mr W. Kirkwood (an ex-New Zealander now visiting Stratford), stated that it is a most remarkable piece of work. The mounting is done on a light metal frame filled with plaster of Paris. The noble horse stands there as he did in life, with his ears pricked, he said. Mr Kirkwood was well acquainted with Phar Lap, having seen him contest most of his races, and the only criticism to be offered to the mounting is that the head appears to be a little too fins. As the head is mounted it appears to be fine drawn, and this could not be said of the horse’s head when he lived; if anything, his head was a little on the coarse side. Inside the front off foot, just above the shoe, shows the hoof cut away to get it right for the big race he won at Agua Caliente. With the exhibit is also shown all the horse’s gear, shoes, saddle, bridle and rugs. The trip from Ashburton to Auckland, part of the way by air. by two trotting drivers, O. E. Hooper and A. Hoimes, with the object of driving at Epsom, was fairly successful. Hooper was accompanied by the owner of Nelson’s Victory, Mr W. Stickings. He drove at the Ashburton meeting on Monday, and travelled by aeroplane to Palmerston North in three and a quarter hours, and then joined the limited express for Auckland. Hooper said it was his first experience of air travel and he enjoyed it. He intended to fly back to Christchurch from Auckland next week-end and if it was not possible to do this, he would go to Wellington by train and fly from there in order to be present at the opening of the Addington trotting meeting on Monday. Holmes was not so fortunate in his venture. After driving Harold Logan into third place in the last race at Ashburton, he motored to Christchurch and caught the ferry steamer to Wellington. The same aeroplane that had carried Hooper was to have gone to Wellington to pick up Holmes early on Tuesday morning, but it had to put back to Palmerston North. Holmes then caught a special race train to that town, and flew to Auckland by aeroplane in two hours 35 minutes. He arrived too late to drive Harvest Child in the Cup and just missed the drive behind Golden Direct in the Christmas Handicap. However, he drove Harvest Child in the St, Helier’s Handicap, finishing fourth. Girvan was an odds-on favourite for the Winton Trotting Club Handicap. At the start Tini Uria, Honest Dillon, and Matchmaker failed to get away well, while Lady Voisin was slow to move. Godetia led out from Grey Girl, i Girvan, Ellegro and Gumdigger Going | to the back Girvan took charge from ! Godetia, Grey Girl, Gumdigger and Erin’s Princess, who were almosc bunched. Passing the stands Girvan was out clear, then came Godetia, Gumdigger, Grey Girl, Erin’s Princess, Ellegro, Jolly Wave, and Suncross. Going to the back the second time Girvan was setting a strong pace, with Gumdigger moving out from Godetia. Erin’s Princess, Jolly Wave, Grey Girl and Erin’s Fail*. When crossing the top and about two furlongs from home Gumdigger ranged up to Girvan and Jolly Wave took third place, while Lady Voisin came from behind, with Erin’s Princess, Godetia and Grey Girl next in close-running order. When the straight was reached Girvan always held his own to carry on and win with a little in reserve by two lengths from Gumdigger, who was half a length in advance of Jolly Wave The winner paced a very fine race to record his fifth successive victory, and he won in 4.32—private watches made it 2.17 for the first mile and 4.31 for the full trip as clocked from an angle.
