OUR BANDS. (Contributed). Music is called on to express the feeling of the multitude to a greater extent than at any other time of the year, and our Bands have many calls for their services. A Christchurch contemporary, speaking of the work of the eight or nine Christchurch bands which helped in the Rotary Club’s appeal last Sunday, says; “To the Bands, considering the long background of training and practice which precedes their every public performance, Christchurch owes special thanks.” What applies to Christchurch, applies also to most towns. The Bands are called upon and give freely at all times. Thanks for their services is always appreciated by the Bands, but that alone will not keep them in existere. We hear neoDle at this time say, “the Bend should not think of going to contests this year; it is such a waste of money.” The answer to this is that the money so spent will be a good investment. Competition is the backbone of the brass band movement, and Bands should be encouraged and afforded every assistance to attend contests. which are the pathway to real musical development. Think well of your Bond, encourage the members by attending their performances. aid them hy your support, and you will be helping to ad”ertise your town, and will get the benefits of the improved standing of the institution. Music is taking an ever-growing place in the life of the community. It has an uplifting influence, and, besides giving great personal satisfaction to the performers, it is a hobby that gives the greatest pleasure to the greatest number.
