Heretofore the hardness of the steel in the 3-hole blade has been necessarily more or less uniform throughout the blade. Particular care was required to prevent the steel in the centre of the blade from being too brittle, otherwise the blade would crack along the line A-B. The result was that the steel at the edge C-D was only just 50 hard as it was possible to have it in the centre of the blade, i.e., the edges of the blade were necessarily sacrificed to the centre.
