BOYS’ WELFARE LEAGUE

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. At a meeting of the Boys’ Welfare League held recently, with the Rev. Gladstone Hughes in the chair, there were also present —Messrs W. Cum\iing, W. W. Garton, G. McKessar, G. S. Cray, C. W. Mathers and F. E. S. Lc\g. It was reported that two meetings had been held with representatives of local bodies in connection with an effort to find positions for unemployed boys. Various suggestions and recommendations brought forward at the meetings were discussed. The matter of a display of local industries had been left in the hands of Mr W. G. Irwin and local manufacturers.

The suggestion that the town be canvassed for orders for the oiling of paling fences was discussed at length. Mr O. Hutchinson had promised to obtain the oil necessary for the work. It was decided to send out a number of boys to obtain orders, measuring the fences and giving a price for the work. It was reported that the Main School had collected, by means of a concert, £Bl/18/- towards the League’s funds. Various expenses had yet to be deducted from that amount.—A hearty vote of thanks was moved to Mr Garton and the pupils of the school for their efforts.

The Boys’ High School had netted £37 by means of a concert held at the School. —Votes of thanks were also carried to Mr Thomas and the boys for their efforts.

It was reported that the Borough Council had loaned seats, free of charge, for the concert. Mr Deans had carted the seats free of charge, and Mr John Stevens had made a donation of the cost of printing tickets, etc. —Appreciation of these generous acts was minuted.

A vote of thanks was also carried to the members of the Ashbury Croquet Club for a donation to the funds. It was reported that the League had £BO to its credit, with sundry amounts debited against this, Mr Long reported that 92 boys were on the register at the Y.M.C.A., awaiting employment.
