MOTUEKA SEAT

MR WEBB OPENS CAMPAIGN. By Telegraph Press Association. NELSON. November 1. Mr P. C. Webb( official Labour candidate for the Moteuka seat, said at the bpening cf his campaign that Sir Joseph Ward himself had been against further wage reductions. Labour supported their pledges, but the Coalition violated practically every pledge by reducing wages, and cutting down the earning power of the people. The result was slumps, depression and unemployment. He advocated a combination of interests of farmers with other interests, including factories and mines, in a bond that would unite the Labour Party. He stood for this one united organised party. The Labour Party was young, and virile, with advanced ideas in keeping with the new era. Old parties and old orders would never save the people. The people to-day must be Redeemed by themselves. Mr Webb explained his attitude towards conscription, and his fight against it at the beginning of the war. He had no apologies to offer, and would do the same thing had he his j life to live again under the same circumstances. He advocated a State bank with the sole right of note issue, whereby the cashbox of the people would be under the control of the people and not in the hands of capitalistic interests. The capitalistic system was breaking down under its own weight. Labour’s currency scheme was the only feasible one.
