GERALDINE

IDEAL WEATHER. B~ ; ght sunshine yesterday was a delightful contrast to the weather of the past fortnight, when steady rain continued for several days. The recordings for the previous 24 hours at 9 a.m. daily on Mr B. R. Macdonald’s gauge at “Waitui," have been as follows, since the recent wet weather set in on Friday of last week:—Saturday, 19 po nts; Sunday, one inch and 22 points; Monday, 83 points; Tuesday, 11 points; Wednesdya, 43 points; Thursday, 22 points; and yesterday, 2 points; a total of 3.2 inches. AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITY HOCKEY TEAM. The Geraldine County Hockey SubAssociation has been offered a match with the combined Australian Universities team, which will tour New Zealand next June. In view of the fact that only two matches, other than games against Canterbury College and Otago University, will be played in the South Island, the offer is a distinct tribute to Geraldine, which has long been prominent as a hockey district. It may also be recalled that the Indian Army team and two Australian hockey teams have played in Geraldine within recent years. The offer to arrange a match with the Australian Universities’ team requires the confirmation of the New Zealand Hockey Council, but it is anticipated that the match will take place. SENIOR CRICKET. After two postponements owing to wet weather, the Celtic team, winners of last season’s senior competition, will meet Geraldine on the Geraldine oval this afternoon. The Geraldine team will comprise: Stone-Wigg. Alpers, Scott, Sharpe. Callanan. Cain. Williams, Barker, Turner, Sherwin and Ellis. VALEDICTORY. Opportunity was taken yesterday afternoon by the members of the St. Mary’s Ladies’ Guild to bid goodbye to Mrs W. Harris, of Pleasant Valley, who will shortly take up residence in Christchurch. The president (Mrs J. F. Coursey) presented Mrs Harris with a cheque on behalf of the members of the Guild, who wished her every success and happiness in her new sphere. Mrs Harris made a suitable acknowledgment of the gift and good wishes. During the afternoon vocal solos were given by Mesdames J. F. Coursey and W. McClure. An amusing competition was won by Mrs J. Sinclair Thomson. GERALDINE PLAYERS. The Geraldine Players have been invited by the South Canterbury Drama League to present the one-act play “The Touchstone," at Timaru. “The Touchstone,” which was written by Mrs F. V. Targuse, of Christchurch, secured first equal in this year’s playwriting competition for New Zealand authors, conducted by the Wellington Division of the British Drama League, with “Fear,” by the same author. “The Touchstone" also won the South Canterbury Drama League’s competition this year for Mrs Targuse. PERSONAL. Mrs Rhodes, Mrs Prattley and Miss Joyce Prattley (Milford), and Mrs King and family (Temuka), are spending a holiday at Peel Forest. MUNICIPAL THEATRE. “Once a Lady,” a dramatic story, which gives Ruth Chatterton full scope for her powers as an emotional actress, will have pride of place at the Municipal Theatre this evening. The story has gaiety, romance, action, pathos, and provides opportunity for full expression of Ruth Chatterton’s genius. The leading character is a composite of other roles made famous by Miss Chatterton. It has the emotional depth of her “Madame X"; the heart-touching mother love of “Sarah and Son.” There is a giimpse of the abandon of “Pansy” in “The Better Wife." and something of the repression of “Naomi” in “The Right to Love.” Ruth Chatterton is the screen's outstanding emotional actress, now at the very peak of her career. Good supports will also be screened.

Mr E. Cholerton. representing John R. Procter, Ltd., the Premier Opticians, of Christchurch, will be visiting Geraldine on Wednesday, 26th of October, and may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel
