A CLEVER WOMAN
A DANGEROUS RIVAL. It takes a clever woman to maxe herself beautiful when nature has decreed i that she shall be plain. Yet the plainer , | the woman the more successful she is, ; providing, of course, she is clever ; 1 enough. . | It needs brains to realise the truth l ' and courage to face it. This is where I the really plain woman scores. She l | takes a cold, calculating look at her- . j self, and dots down the deficiencies. . = Face, of course comes first. Then - figure. Having-boldly faced the truth, looks, as such, no longer matter. It is clever - - ness which counts. The clever woman can always get / away with it where her appearance is r concerned. She gives an impression of beauty where, strictly speaking, f none exists. Except that of her soul, 3 I which perhaps only her eyes reveal. I Her nose may be too large, too small, 1 | or even definitely ugly. Her eyes L ’ j may be mere beads, her brows or 1 j lashes absent. Her teeth may be her j only redeeming feature. Yet she will B ' still get away with it.
Beauty is hers for the asking, and she is clever enough not to ask twice. And why shouldn’t she make herself j good to look at? There is nothing j false in a plain woman making herself | beautiful. She is merely doing her j duty to her fellow-citizens. It is the i duty of every woman to make herself attractive, but it is left to the plain woman to show her better-looking sisters the way. She cannot afford to be slack about her appearance. She must always be up to scratch. Wellfitting clothing. Immaculate groom-
