DECORATIVE LITTLE GIFTS

SOMETHING TO MAKE. Newspaper Rack.—Material required: Cardboard, raffia, ribbon. Take two pieces of cardboard, one 12In. by Bin., and the second 12in. by 4in. Carefully wind raffia over the cardboard, either in contrasting or the same colour. Join the two together by stitching at the bottom (use a sharp, strong needle). Thread ribbon through the top, so that the rack will hang up easily. Dinner Mats.—Material required: Four or six cardboard rounds and two or three oval shapes, both with holes in the centre (these can be cut by yourself) . Green is a good colour, and looks very effective on a white tablecloth. Choose good thick raffia and wind very carefully, seeing that the ends are secure when you join on; finish off by running the last piece under —with a needle. Separate mats made this way are quite useful for flower vases, and make a jolly little present. Needle Case.—Material required: Canvas, raffia, sateen or silk, flannel.

Turn the canvas edges with buttonhole stitch. Work canvas in bright raffia (or wool), line with sateen. Cut smaller pieces of flannel and tie in with raffia or ribbon.
