AUSTRALIA’S FEAT

AN ASTOUNDING IMPROVEMENT IN POSITION. LONDON, October 8. “Australia is entitled to a place in the very front rank. The Commonwealth faced the most calamitous financial blizzard any country has endured, and has come through with flying colours. Australia is indeed splendid.” So writes Mr Esmond Harmsworth, who recently succeeded Lord Rothermere as chairman of Associated Newspapers, in a four-column article’ in the “Daily Mail” entitled “Australia is Splendid.” One more step remains to be taken —reduction of the cost of the national debt. Australia has re-es-tablished her credit on a higher basis than at any previous time in her existence. The achievement is even greater than Britain’s, considering the wide difference between the capacities to recover. Australia faced her alarming position with such courage and understanding that, within a remarkably short period an astounding improvement has been effected. The adverse trade balance has been amazingly converted into a favourable balance. Adjustment of Budgets has been achieved by means drastic that their loyal acceptance constitutes an epic in national endeavour.
