CRICKET
BRADMAN WILL PLAY IN PERTH. STATE INVITATION ACCEPTED. United Press Association -By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyr.ght SYDNEY. October 14 Bradman is going to Perth to play in the Combined Eleven against the Englishmen on October 27. He telegraphed to Perth informing them that he was available, and a reply has been received inviting him to go. Mr Robertson denied that he had stated that Bradman had given an assurance to the Board that he would not write for the Press. BRADMAN DEFENDED. SPORTING EFFORTS OF SYDNEY ENTHUSIASTS. The Sydney correspondent of the “New Zealand Herald” writes: "When it was practically certain that Bradman would go to England to play cricket, three Sydney firms joined forces to give him a salary equal to that which he would have received had he gone abroad. They did that with the sole object of retaining his services for Australia. One of these firms is Associated Newspapers, the other proprietor of a “B" class broadcasting station, and the third a retail firm. In accordance with the decision of the board a fortnight ago, Bradman has applied for permission to write in the terms of his newspaper contract, but as he is unable to give an assurance that his journalism is a full-time job, his application cannot come before the board. This point has been decided by the chairman of the board, and Bradman says that as far as he is concerned negotiations are at an end.
"When the contract was drawn up the player-writer rule was in force, and it was specially provided that Bradman should not at any time be called upon to comment upon the prospects of selection of any cricketers in a first-class match. It is fairly obvious that the contract was framed to meet the requirements of the Board of Control. An offer by the newspaper to release him is not regarded as satisfactory by Bradman, who maintains that he is bound by honour to fulfil to the letter the terms of his agreement. The whole atmosphere must be very unsettling to him, although he has not shown it in the grade matches, which began last Saturday. He showed on Monday that he was just as prolific a scorer as ever he was.”
