PLIGHT OF INDUSTRY
REHABILITATION EFFORTS Sir Graham Waddell, chairman of the Australian Woolgrowers’ Council, on behalf of the affiliated organisations of wool-growers, has written to the Prime Minister requesting the Federal Government to appoint an independent committee of inquiry, composed of technical and expert representatives of all the wool interests, to conduct an immediate investigation on behalf of the Government as to the best means of assisting the rehabilitation of the wool industry. He arranged lately to discuss the question with the Prime Minister. Sir Graham Waddell said he /would emphasise that the period available before the commencement of the Australian woolselling season was so short that no time should be lost in considering the question of practical remedies. He had already urged that a committee of inquiry should be constituted forthwith, so that it might be possible to start investigations without further delay. The recent improvement of the wool market, while it was a hopeful sign, still left current prices much below even the collapsed price of last year, and far below the cost of production in any country in the world.
