A meeting of the General Committee of the Geraldine School Diamond Jubilee was held on Tuesday evening, the chairman (Mr A. M. Fyfe) presiding. The reports showed that arrangements were well in hand for the jubilee celebrations next month. The chairman intimated that several quotations had been received for printing a jubilee booklet, but the special sub-committee had not had time to consider them.— On the motion of Mr E. Twigg, the quotations were left to the sub-com-mittee for consideration. The convener of the Works Committee (Mr H. Lord) reported that arrangements were well in hand as far as his committee was concerned. The Director of Education (Mr T. B. Strong), wrote doubting very much whether his engagements would enable him to be present. Should he not be able to attend, Mr Strong asked the secretary to convey to the Jubilee Committee his sincere wish that the celebrations would be a source of pleasure and inspiration to both past and present pupils. The secretary of the Canterbury Education Board (Mr C. K.irk), wrote stating that he had been asked by the chairman (Mr Bignell), to acknowledge receipt of the invitation to be present. Mr Bignell resided in Greymouth. and. as his health was not very satisfactory at present, he regretted that he probably would not be able to come over. At the Board meeting last week, it had been decided to ask Messrs G. W. Armitage (Temuka), and S. Smith (Methven), to represent the Board at the functions.

The chairman of the sports committee (Mr L. Bennington), reported that a second meeting of the committee had been held on Monday. Mr Bennington reported the establishment of a Procession Committee, and the arrangements made by that committee were approved. Mr Bennington continued that the programme had been again considered, and the following amended one approved, subject to confirmation by the General Committee: The afternoon's proceedings would commence 'with the procession whose movements had already been outlined by the Procession Committee. Following the arrival of the procession at the Domain, ex-pup Is and present pupils would march to the ground to take part in the proceedings there. These would be opened by decade races; the children’s activities consisting of a march round the Oval headed by the Geraldine Band, drill displays, children’s races, distribution of fruit and badges to the children. On completion of the children’s races, afternoon tea would be prov'ded for ex-pupils at the grain store. Following the children’s section, there would be a burlesque hockey match, a burlesque football match, and a demonstration of the "Darktown Brigade" which would conclude the afternoon’s entertainment. The arrangement of the children’s section was left to the staffs of the secondary and primary departments. The allotting of prizes was also left to the school staff. Mr Bennington suggested that the prizes for the ex-pupils’ decade races should be provided by the Jubilee Committee and not by the Sports Committee. which was raising funds to provide prizes for the children’s races.

The chairman remarked that small cups which could be procured at a reasonable cost, would make a suitable memento of the occasion.

The secretary (Mr W. A. Sherratt), intimated that a rough balance sheet

had been drawn up which showed that the expenditure to date amounted to £26/19/1. Allowing for the anticipated general expenses, plus the cost of catering, it was estimated that the expenditure would total £136/19/1, which 375 registrations by ex-pupils would cover. It w’as proposed to allocate £5 to the Sports Committee to provide prizes for the children’s races. Mr Bennington remarked that £5 would cover the cost of advertising the sports as well as the prizes. The Sports Committee hoped to raise suffleeint funds, so that it would not be necessary to call on the General Committee for assistance.

The Sports Committee’s report was adopted.

The convener of the Photographs Committee (Mr A. Willoughby), reported that efforts to secure a machine from Timaru for reproducing photographs on the screen without the necessity of making slides had been unsuccessful, but Mr C. C. Knight had offered to construct one. However, the committee thought that perhaps it would be better to have slides made.— The report was adopted. The secretary intimated that the Mayor had granted permission for vehicles to be parked, in High Street on the day of the procession. It was decided that various committees be authorised to expend the following amounts: Refreshment Committee £5, sports £5, entertainment £3, photograph £2/10/-, and works committee £3. On behalf of the Ball Committee. Mr J. Slattery reported that an orchestra had been secured from Timaru. and that the committee was of the opinion that the ball should conclude at one o’clock.—Adopted.

In reply to a question the secretary intimated that 264 ex-pupils had registered to date. Mr Bennington intimated that Mr C. C. Knight had offered to hold a community sing in the Town Hall, the proceeds to be divided between the Boys’ Welfare Committee and the Sports Committee to provide prizes for the children's sports at the jubilee. Mr Bennington added that the Sports Committee had decided that all prize money must be expended locally. Mr E, White suggested that the site

of the original school, near the present sub-station in Talbot Street, should be marked in some way during the jubilee. The chairman agreed that it was a good idea. Mr Willoughby suggested that a flag pole could be erected and the Union Jack flown. The matter was left in abeyance. NOTES. The Pleasant Valley Tennis Club will hold the opening dance on October 7th.
