TEMUKA

TECHNICAL SCHOOL BOARD. The Board of Managers of the Temuka Technical School met last evening. Present —Messrs G. B- Cartwright (chairman), A. E. Smith, L. G. Scrimshaw, C. L. Fraser, J. T. Smart, and E. B. Cooper (director). Correspondence. The Principal of the Timaru Technical School inquired if it was intended to run a shearing class this year. No decision had yet been arrived at in Timaru. The Director said that he had replied stating that it was intended to run a class in Temuka, and that a Humber of inquiries had been made. The class could accommodate about sixteen pupils. Two inquiries had been made from Oamaru. Mr Winter was again available as instructor. Sheep had. already been offered for the It was agreed that the class be advertised, and that applications be invited. The Minister of Education wrote in regard to the fee charged in the woolclassing class. He was in receipt of a petition from eight pupils of the class, asking that the present fee be reduced by 25 per cent. The Minister could not see his way to favour a reduction. The chairman said that, unknown to himself or the Director, the pupils had written to Mr T. D. Burnett, asking his support in the request fpr a reduction. The fees were Dominionwide and were required to be adhered to. The Salvation Army authorities wrote applying for the use of portion of the school buildings for a Christmas camp. Mr Smith said that the School Committee had received a similar letter, but the Committee had asked for further particulars of the campers’ requirements. So far no reply had been received. Considerable discussion ensued as to the wisdom of allowing the school for such purposes, and it was decided that, pending a reply to the Committee’s letter, the Board defer its decision. A similar application for the use of tire school was received from the Canterbury Methodist Young Women’s Bible Class Union, for Easter, 1933. About fifty girls would comprise the party. This application was also held up. Director’s Report. The Director reported that the dressmaking class commenced on September 6th for a further half-term. There were nine pupils on that date, but since then the number had increased to 14. The wool-classing class finished on September 19, having had eleven pupils. Certificates were presented as follows: —Fourth year, L. Livesey; third year, D. Macaulay, N. Baxter; second year, B. Morrison; first year, G. Cartwright, H. King. An offer had been received for the wool. Inquiries were being made in reference to the sheep-shearing class. The Timaru Technical College was not running a class this year and had forwarded addresses of two pupils. Sheep were being offered, and the Director would liKe to see a date set for starting the class. The chairman intimated that the offer for the wool would be accepted. Mr Cartwright said that, with other members of the Board, he had attended the breaking-up of the wool-classing class, when quite a pleasant function was enjoyed. Several of the pupils intimated their intention of taking part in the competition at the Timaru Show.

General. Accounts totalling £3/4/6 were passed for payment.

UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE. The Temuka Unemployment Committee met on Tuesday evening. There were present. Messrs L. F. Robins, F. C. May, A. E. Smith, F. C. Roberts, G. Hancox, A. Leslie and the secretary (Miss I. Meek). Apologies were accepted lor the absence ol the chairman (Mr A. W. Buzan) and Mr T. H. Langford. Mr L. F. Robins was appointed to the chair. The Unemployment Board advised by circular letter that as from the Ist October they would arrange insurance cover for No. 5 Scheme relief workers, to the extent of the wages refunded by them.

Letters in connection with the class of work carried out under the 4A Scheme were dealt with.

MINIATURE RIFLE SOCIAL. The Temuka Miniature Rifle Club’s wind-up social on Tuesday evening was an outstanding success, the Druids' Hall being well filled. The early part of the evening was devoted to cards, and prizes were won as follows: —Ladies.—Mrs J. Fisher 1, Mrs H. P. Dunne 2, Mrs S. Webb (consolation). Men —Mr D. McCallum 1, Mr A. Archer 2, Mr L. Hobbs (consolation). Music for a dance was supplied by Messrs R. Hoare and P. Pierce, and Mr K. Selwyn was M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Misses Spillane and Robb. During the evening the trophies won during the season (published yesterday) were presented by the Mayoress (Mrs A. W. Buzan), in the absence of Mr Buzan. The Club's medal for the season’s aggregate was won by V. Nicholas. WAITEA REBEKAH LODGE No. 35. The fortnightly meeting of the Waitea Rebekah Lodge No. 35 was held on Tuesday evening; Sister W. Arnst N.G. presiding over a small attendance. A motion of sympathy was passed to Sisters Elder and Templeton in their bereavements. Correspondence was received, and two accounts were passed for payment. Sister Young read the report and balance sheet of the last social and dance, which showed a credit balance. The election of officers resulted as follows:—N.G., Sister R. Pierce; V.G , Sister L. Cain; secretary, Sister Young; recording secretary, Sister Ludeman; treasurer, Sister Elder. It was decided to send an invitation to Waihi Lodge to be present on installation night. The meeting closed in the usual manner. Y.P.C.T.U. The Temuka Young Peoples’ Christian Temperance Union celebrated their third birthday on Tuesday evening in the Methodist Sunday School. There was a fair attendance of members, and a number of visitors. Mr Hancox who presided for part of the evening, welcomed those present. The social opened with a hymn and Miss Andrews led in prayer. Games were indulged in, and a com-

petition, "Parcel Post” was won by Miss Airay.

Vocal solos were given by Mis ! es Bryan, Proffitt and Reid, and each had to respond with an encore. A humorous recitation was given by Miss Andrews, and a mandolin solo by Mr Mclnnes. As Mr Hancox was called away at this stage, Mi- W. Mclnnes took the chair. Supper was dispensed by the ladies, after which a birthday cake was cut. This was kindly donated by the Adult Union. Previous to the cutting, and in the absence of the superintendent and president, Miss G. Buck said a few words.

Progress of Movement. This being the third birthday of the Y’s, it had been suggested that a social be held to celebrate it, and also to try and raise funds for local expenses. Owing to the engagements many members were unable to be present, but those present enjoyed themselves. The Branch, which was formed three years ago, started with five members,' knd now there are fifty on the roll. At first the meetings were held at Mrs Elder's residence, which was appreciated very much, but as the membership increased, it was found advisable to hold the meetings in a hall. The young members are keen, and keep up the interest well. Cake Cut. An apology was read with greetings from the District Y. president, Mr A Wilson, who owing to indisposition, was unable to be present. The cake was then cut by vicepresident G. Buck, and officers of the branch handed it round to members and visitors. Thanks were passed to the Adult Union for donation of the cake, to Miss Airay for her services as pianiste, and to all who had made the social a success. The Branch's funds benefited by a small amount raised to help local expenses. Miss Andrews closed the meeting with the Benediction. PERSONAL. Sergeant M. E. Hill, of Palmerston North, who is to replace Sergeant T. Dwan (recently retired), at Temuka, is expected to arrive in a few days’ time. Constable A. McLennan, Temuka, Is sitting an examination for promotion, in Timaru. GENERAL NEWS. Th Temuka police are at present carrying out their annual firearm inspection. Fine sunny weather was experienced in Temuka yesterday. NOTES. The Milford Basketball Club will hold a dance in the hall to-night. “LOVERS COURAGEOUS.” Robert Montgomery is the captivating star of Frederick Lonsdale’s “Lovers Courageous,” a charming new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer offering screening at Temuka to-night. Madge Evans is the girl of his dreams. Together they make as pleasing a romantic team as ever appeared on the screen. The picture is superbly mounted and the backgrounds and camera treatment are splendidly fitted to the theme. In the story Montgomery is a struggling play-

wright who falls in love with toe daughter of an English admiral. To break up her affair with the poor youth, the girl is hastened into a marriage with a titled barrister. However, on the eve of the wedding she elopes with the impoverished author. Tribulations prove too great, and the young husband is obliged to return her to her parents. His play becomes a success later and, of course, there Is a happy reunion. An excellent supporting cast includes Roland Young. Frederics Kerr, Reginald Owen and Beryl Mercer.
