GERALDINE

THE WEATHER The nor'-west conditions which prevailed on Saturday gave a pleasant foretaste of summer, as the weather was unseasonably warm. During the evening the wind changed, and steady rain set in at about 11 o'clock. A downpour continued throughout the night. 75 points, or three-quarters of an inch, being recorded at •■Waitui" at 9 o'clock yesterday morning. Showery conditions continued till about 11 o'clock, when the weather cleared. HOCKEY. The following teams have been selected for the annual Geraldine Benedicts v. Bachelors hockey match to be played next. Thursday:— Benedicts—C. C. Knight, G. S. Maloney. A. Bryant, Z. Sherratt. H. J. Bowkett, A. Sutherland. V. Prouting. H. Morrison. D. Turner, H. Cowie. N. Watt, and F. Wallach. Bachelors—R. Hayes. G. Webb. J. Callanan, P. McShane. M. Watson, L. Wood, A. Vincent, J. Pugh. G. Vial, J. Webb, W. Rule. Emergencies: J. S. Clyne, J. Sullivan. C. Pierce. GERALDINE BOWLING CLUB. The annual meeting of the Geraldine Bowling Club was held in Mr W. W. Williamson's rooms on Friday evening, the president <Mr W. McClure* occupying the chair. There was an attendance of about 20 member#.

Annual Report. The annual report stated that the membership was well up to the average, twelve new members having been elected during the year, making a total of 49 including three life members. Two active members. Messrs T. Hughes and M. G. Williams, both past presidents. were removed by death, and the members sincerely regretted the loss of two keen bowlers. The weather during the year was particularly favourable for bowling, but. unfortunately, the dry spring and summer was detrimental to the green, and the rinks during the season were unsatisfactory. However, since the season closed the green had been top-dressed and levelled by an expert, and there was every indication that the surface would be in first class order for the opening day. The Club competitions were again very successful, and the games were keenly contested. The winners were— H. Turner. champion singles; I. Schrader, handicap singles (Campbell cup); Canon J. F. Coursey and B Logan, handicap doubles; J. Campbell and H. Turner, champion doubles. In the championship and pennant matches, the Thursday rinks won two and lost three games, and the Saturday rinks won one and lost three games. In the three friendly matches played the Club won two and lost one. The Club commenced the year with a credit balance of £5 1 3. The income for the season was £92 3 -. and the expenditure £lO3 13'-. so that there was a debit balance of £6 8 9 on the year's working, but the position would have shown a credit of £ll/8/3 had

to £l7 17 -, been paid. The only extra expenditure was £l9 2 3 incurred by the employment of the expert and his assistants to top-dress and level the green. The position of the Club was quite satisfactory, as most of the outi standing subscriptions, if not all. would : r be collected, and there were no lia- j bilities. i In moving the adoption of the re- | port, the president said that although ! the green had not been quite up to the usual standard, members had enjoyed their season's play. A good deal of time and money had been spent in top-dressing the green, and it was expected that it would be in first-class order at the opening of the season. Although the season had commenced with a credit balance of £5 the extra expense of levelling and top-dressing had been responsible for a small debit balance. However, the Club's finances were in a satisfactory position. In conclusion, Mr McClure thanked the officials and members for their loyal support during the year. The motion was carried. Election of Officers. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patrons, Messrs T. D. Burnett. M.P.. and J. Kennedy; president, Mr J. D. McKechnie; vice-president, Mr A. G. Brown; secretary. Mr T. J. Paterson; treasurer. Mr J. R. Lack; auditors. Messrs A. A. Readdie and W. McClure; committee, Messrs 11. Turner. B. Logan. A. J. Burmester. T. McKinlay. and G. R. Knibb; green steward, Mr M. Campbell; delegate to the South Canterbury Bowling Centre, Mr B. Logan; delegate to the Geraldine Sports Association. Mr C. Stock; refreshment steward. Mr B. Logan; transport officer. Mr T. J. Paterson; handicappers for Club competitions, Messrs W. Watts and H. Turner. Mr W. W. Williamson was elected a life member in appreciation of his many years of service to the Club. Selection of Teams. The method of selecting teams was discussed at considerable length, and it was decided that the Club should select the skips, who would then choose their own rinks, the lowest skip to stand down, and the highest third to be promoted to skip General. The matter of appointing a caretaker was left to the Committee. It was agreed to forward a challenge for the Bristol Cup. The secretary (Mr T. J. Paterson) was voted an honorarium of £3 3 -in appreciation of his services. The fixing of opening day was left to the president and Mr M. Campbell to arrange. Votes of thanks were extended to the retiring president (Mr W. McClure). Mr Coombs for his work on the green, and to Mr Williamson for the use of his room for the meeting. TENNIS CLUB The report to be submitted to the annual meeting - of the Geraldine Tennis Club states:— Successful Season.—The 1931-32 season has been marked by renewed enthusiasm. The courts were officially opened by the Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald). on October 8. in the presence of a large number of members and friends. They closing day was held on March 31. Men's Challenge Cup.—Mr Cyril Davies has offered the Club a challenge cup for men’s handicap singles, to be competed for under conditions drawn up by the Committee and acceptable to the donor. Affiliation.—The Club renewed its affiliation to the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. ..As the result of special negotiations, the Club was permitted by the parent body to affiliate also to the Ternuka Town and District Association. This has proved highly successful, and the Club's thanks are due to the major Association for granting the required permission. The Club's delegates to the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association were Messrs Hammond and Oxford, of Timaru. and to the Ternuka Town and District Association, Mr W. H. Jackson. Competitions.—A team from the Club took part in the South Canterbury

Lawn Tennis Association’s "B” grade competition on Saturdays at the Maori Park grass courts. Though not the winners, the team gamed valuab’« and useful match experience and acquitted itself very creditably under the captaincy of Mr D. Callanan. A separate team from the Club tock part in the Ternuka Town and District Association's “A” grade competition. This team, composed almost wholly of players whose match abilities were untried. proved so strong a competitor for its earlier opponents that the Ternuka Association raised the question of imposing some restriction on the Geraldine Club as a competitor in the Association's games. The Executive, however, decided to impose no restriction for the then current season, but arranged to have the matter discussed at the Association's annual meeting in order that a definite ur' 1 ' ,v ~ + "'g

might be readied for the 1932-33 sea- ! son. The extends its congratulations to the captain. Mr C. Stringer, and his team on their efficiency and enthusiasm in the games they played. Court Maintenance. —During the season edges of the courts were kept clean by chipping. The fences were repaired and strengthened; the gates were mended and the entrance from the main pathway to the pavilion was widened. The fence posts. gates, volley-board, umpires' seats and the pavilion were all painted. The liningout of the courts was done by members. The nets were kept in as good repair as possible, and no nevy ones were bought. They are now nearly worn out. and at least two will soon need replacing. No court .surface repair work was done; it was deemed advisable to postpone such repairs as were necessary until after the winter. Nos. 1 and 2 courts are in fair order; No. 3 court requires immediate attention. The committee has sought to conserve its funds as much as possible for the purpose of making money available for surface repairs. The committee desires to express its thanks especially to Mr H. Coombs for his services in keeping the lawn in front of the pavilion in good order. Friendly Matches.—Friendly matches were exchanged with Te Marae Club (Ashburton). and with the Pleasant Point Club, and were thoroughly enjoyed.. * * The Ladder.—There has been keen competition for positions on the ranking list. The ladder committee is pleased to be able to report that no disputes occurred, necessitating its intervention. This indicates the existence of a highly commendable sporting spirit. Afternoon Teas.—Each of the lady members of the Club has given a teaday. or paid ten shillings into the general fund. The supplementing of that arrangement by the provision of ' biscuit" days, along with charges for electricity, cake. tea. sugar, and milk has entailed a charge on the Club funds of approximately £7. The retiring committee consider that a separate tea-dav fund should be established, that the afternoon teas should be selfsupperting. and that no charge towards afternoon teas should be made on the general fund derived from ordinary subscription.

School-Children Members.— The committee again extended the use of its courts to the school children in return for a nominal subscription. This is a policy designed to promote the interests of the game amongst the Club's future pros£>ective members. Club Dance.—An end-of-season dance was held on March 17. The function, which was organised by a special committee under the chairmanship of Mr M. Miller, was an unqualified success. Thanks.—The committee wishes to express thanks to Dr. P. W. Hislop. a life member, and Mrs Hislop for their continued interest and active support; to Mr Alan Jones for his efficient services as treasurer; to Miss Mabel Symmington for acting as lady secretary; to the ladies for providing refreshments; to the selectors for their work in connection with match teams; and to the members generally for their j ready and willing co-operation. MUNICIPAL THEATRE.

"Tell England." Ernest Raymond's graphic epic of Gallipoli, will have pride of place at the Municipal Theatre to-night and to-morrow evening. Mr C. C. Knight has invited unemployed returned soldiers at> his guests, and passes may be obtained from the president of the Geraldine Returned Soldiers' Association. "Tell England" is the most deadly propaganda against the futility of war which has yet appeared on the screen. The highest point in the film is reached in the sequences which show, first of all. the landing of the Australians and New Zealanders on the beach at Anzac; but realistic and vivid as these scenes are. they cannot compare with those showing the tragedy of the 29th Division landing from the River Clyde on V beach. Mr Carl Harbord gives a memorable performance as Edgar Doe. and Mr Tony Bruce as Rupert Ray. Strong suppers will also be screened.
