SNOW IN NORTH AND SOUTH
HEAVY FALLS REPORTED. INCHES DEEP IN TARANAKI. By Telegraph—Press Association ELTHAM, August 5. The Eltham township and the whole surrounding district woke this morning to the unusual spectacle of a heavy fall of snow, several inches in depth. It was the heaviest experienced for very many years. Ski-in g was indulged in by one party in the Eltham streets. BIGGEST FALL IN WAIRARAPA SINCE 1918. By Telegraph— Press Association MASTERTON. August 5. The heaviest fall of snow in trie East Coast since 1918 occurred to-day. A wide area is affected, the snow being a foot deep on the higher slopes of the Maungaraki range. The foothills of the Tararua Mountains also were well covered. Snow fell in Masterton and other parts of the Wairarapa Valley, but soon disappeared on the lowlands. Lambing has not started. WELLINGTON HILLS COVERED. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, August 5. A southerly came up in Wellington late yesterday afternoon. Light snow has fallen on the hills at Upper Hutt, and the Tararuas are well covered. Today is sunny, but cold. SEVERAL INCHES IN CHRISTCHURCH. By Telegraph--Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, August 5. The heaviest fall of snow for some years was experienced overnight. It covered the ground inches deep this morning. A further heavy fall occurred at 9 o'clock and the indication were that more snow was to follow. The snow caused a slight disorganisation to the City transport services early this morning, but the normal schedule was quickly restored. The ferry steamer Maori arrived three hours late, having experienced a rough tip, with heavy hail and sleet squalls. BIG STORM IN OTAGO. By Telegraph—Presn Association DUNEDIN, August 5. There has been a heavy, widespread snowstorm throughout the Dunedin district, the fall lying two inches thick around the city. The roads in the country are, however, passable. OAMARU COATED. By Telegraph—Press Association OAMARU, August 5. The first snow this winter was experienced at Oamaru last night. Thure was about an inch deep in the town, but was heavier in the back country.
The weather to-day is cold v and sunny. The snow in town disappeared by noon.
