GERALDINE

THE WEATHER. Although the frost was not so severe, only eight degrees being registered at the Primary School, conditions were bitterly cold yesterday, a penetrating south - westerly wind continuing throughout the day. FOOTBALL TEAM DEFAULTS. As the Geraldine Football Club is unable to field a team, the juniors have been obliged to default to Pareora in the match arranged for to-day. MOTHERS’ UNION There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the St. Mary’s Mothers’ Union in the Parish Hall. After the customary service in the Church, the Vicar (Canon J. F. Coursey) continued his address on religous instruction in the home. At the conclusion of the address afternoon tea was served. WOMEN’S INSTITUTES. There was a large atteiiuunce at a meeting of the Geraldine Group of Women’s Instititutes, held in the Oddfellow's Hall on Thursday afternoon. As the president (Miss M. Cruickshank) was unable to be present for the early part of the meeting, the vicepresident (Mrs J. P. Cliff) took the chair, and was assisted by Mrs L. E. Williams, president of the South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes. The meeting opened with the singing of the Institute song. Mrs F. Raymond, Timaru, wrote thanking the combined Geraldine District Institutes for the donation of blankets to the Central Relief Society. Mi's P. W. Hislop, president of the Geraldine Benevolent Guild, also wrote conveying thanks for a donation towards local relief from the combined Institutes. Mrs J. Anniss, Fairlie, gave an interesting demonstration on making wool mats, and explained the cleaning and dyeing of wool before use. A figure-modelling demonstration was given by Mrs Shears and Miss Redditt (Fairlie). Miss Jessie Vincent acting as a model. Mrs Stewart (Timaru). gave an instructive address on literature. On the motion of Mrs Hislop, votes of thanks were recorded the speakers. Sister Christian gave an address on Red Cross work, and suggested that a sub-centre be formed at Geraldine, for the purpose of making clothes for children of returned soldiers in poor circumstances. It was decided to form a sub-centre in Geraldine. Miss Fergusson. Christchurch, wrote advising that a party would visit Geraldine on August 19th. to give instruction in country dancing, at the Tow'n Hall. The tea hostesses were the president (Miss M. Cruickshank), Mesdames J. H. Lewis, W. F. Lewitt. M. Anderson, Haskins, C. S. Davies, Misses V. Pratt and M. Bell. MUNICIPAL THEATRE. "Riders of the Purple Sage/’ a powerful romance of the great outdoors by Zane Grey, will be screened at the Geraldine Municipal Theatre this evening. One important scene shows the stampede of five hundred fear-crazed cattle being turned, single handed, by George O'Brien, who outraces the herd down a narrow gorge. Another thrilling moment is provided by a mighty avalanche, in which hundreds of tons of rock plunge down a mountain side on a group of pursuing , riders. A great fire, in which a twostorey ranch house is consumed, offers another breath-taking moment. This huge house, completely furnished, was constructed by the Fox Film Company on a carefully chosen site in the Verde Valley, and word that the set was to be destroyed by fire brought in natives from miles around the evening of the spectacle. Many of these people travelled sixty miles or more to see the blaze. Marguerite Churchill, Noah Beery and Yvonne Pelletier are featured with O’Brien in the cast of "Riders of the Purple Sage.” which was directed by Hamilton MacFadden. Interesting variety supports, including a comedy, travelogue and a Fox news will also be screened. NOTES. The Geraldine Football Club will hold a dance in the Town Hall on Thursday. A concert and dance will be held in the Orari Bridge Hall on August 15th, in aid of the school funds. Adjutant Hildreth (Christchurch) will conduct the 43rd anniversary services of the Salvation Army, Geraldine, to be held to-morrow at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. On Monday, at 7.30. there will be a musical programme and supper. Mr W. Keen, Woodbury, advertises that the pure-bred Clydesdale stallion, Fabric’s Success, will travel the Woodbury and surrounding district. The Geraldine Basketball Club will ' hold a dance on Tuesday. ] John R.
