MINIATURE RIFLES

W. DUNCAN WINS THE SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. HOOK WINS TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP. The South Island individual and teams championships were commenced on Saturday afternoon at two o’clock, and were completed at midnight. The shoot was quite a success, there being about 150 of picked riflemen from as far south to Christchurch. The meeting was the first in New Zealand to use the small target, and it was considered by some of the most experienced riflemen to be much harder than the larger bull on the 25-yard range. For all that, some very fine shooting was put up. The meeting went off without a hitch; every officer did his work without mistake, which made the meeting a pleasant one. There were a number of ex-champions and noted riflemen competing, and some with a very long shooting career.

The individual championship of the South Island was won by Pres. W. Duncan of the Timaru Association, who got the possible 160, being the only one to get the double possible. There were four with one point down—V. Nicholas (Temuka), J. McFarlane (Hunter), J. Hull (Glen-iti) and R. Meredith ‘Hilton), who divided second, third, fourth and fifth money. Four men tied for first place with the possible 80, M. Johnston (Glen-iti), W. Duncan (Timaru), R. Meredith (Hilton), and W. Bradshaw (Timaru), and there were 17 with 79 who divided from the sth to 12th prize money. The championship team shoot, won by Hook, with 390 out of 400. Hunter were second with 389, and Lynford, Arno and Timaru C third with 388. The England Mcßae Cup for the South Canterbury team putting on the highest score in the South Island championship shoot, was also won by Hook.

At the conclusion, the president (Mr j W. Duncan) extended a welcome to all l the visitors. He said it was a credit to j those who had come so far, and there j were men from a 200-mile radius. Mr ' Duncan specially thanked the officers ! of the Association for the way they carried out their duties. He said every man had been at his post and right on time, and that made the meeting the success it had been. ,

Mr Duncan then called on Mr F. Lewis, the late president of the Association, and now patron, to present the representative badges to those members of the Timaru representatives who had not received them at the previous presentation. Mr Lewis congratulated the men on getting into the representative team, and hoped that they would get another bar this year. Mr Lewis then announced that W. Duncan had proved the winner of the South Island championship, and he had much pleasure is congratulating him on such a fine shoot. Mr Lev is congratulated the members of the Association on the way the meeting had been controlled.

Mr Mcßae presented the England Mcßae Cup to the captain of the Hook team, and congratulated the team on being able to take the cup this year. He also presented the members of the team with a miniature of the big cup, which becomes their own property. The members of the team were.—A. Kingsbury, J. Medlicott, C. Medlicott, L. Rathgen and R. Wilson. Cheers were called for the winners.

The president thanked Messrs Lewis and Mcßae for coming along to assist. He mentioned that there was only one lady shooter at the meeting and he congratulated her and hoped next year she would be there again and further up the list. The following is a list of scores:
