WOMEN’S SIX-A-SIDE TOURNEY. TINWALD AGAIN VICTORIOUS. Favoured by fine weather, a good afternoon’s hockey was witnessed on Saturday, before a large attendance, on the occasion of the women’s six-a-side tournament at the Park. The ground was a trifle heavy, making control difficult, but a high standard of hockey was maintained by all teams. The arrangements were all that could be desired, and credit is due to the officials, who ■were as follows: Supervisor, Mr G. Hughes; timekeepers, Messrs J. Annear. and P. Wisker; blackboard steward. Mr J. Cremin; team steward, Mr W. G. Annear; referees, Messrs W. Gow, V. Hahn L. Waters, L. Dpckrill, L. Davies, and A. Goodman. Tinwald, who have a great record at tourneys, were again victorious in the senior section, this being the second year in succession they have won this honour at Timaru. All the gatnes were won with comparative sease. excepting that against Pirata, the latter team extending them into three spells, and Tinwald just winning by half a point. A popular win was registered in the junior section by Wesley, who battled hard throughput the afternoon, and defeated Arawa, the runners.-up by one goal. .j /;.* Results were as follows;.— SENIOR SECTION.’ Stafford 1 v. Tinwald. with their machine-like combination, had no difficulty in disposing of Arawa. having the latter in their 25 throughout the game. F. Gudsell two and S. The winners’ combination was too good for Alpine. The latter were unlucky in having to play two hard games in succession. Wesley 1 v. Fairlie H.S. 0. A great game, both teams being fully extended. After some fine rallies, O. Howard secured in neutral territory, and made a fine run to score. Final. Wesley 2 v. Arawa 1. This proved the most exciting game of the afternoon. Fine team work was shown by both sides, Arawa making great efforts to penetrate the back line, only magnificent defence by M. Tobin and V. Skudder keeping the goal intact. An attack initiated by J. Doyle terminated in a fine goal by M. Coote. At the opening of the second spell M. Fitzgerald was responsible far Wesley’s second score. A wonderful rally was then made by Arawa. a score being registered. Returning to the attack, they were keeping Wesley on defence at time, but failed to equalise. The winning team was—M. Tobin (captain), M. Fitzgerald, O. Howard, V. Skudder, M. Coote, J. Doyle. The victors were carried off the field by supporters. PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. At the conclusion of the games, the president of the South Canterbury Hockey Association, Mr W. Gow, presented the cups to the winners of each section. He stated that Tinwald. the winners of the senior cup. had a unique record in tournaments in the last few years, viz.:—l929 (3), 1930 (3), 1931 (5), and 1932 (3). Hearty cheers were given for the winners, also for Pirata the runners-up. Mr Gow, in presenting the junior cups to the members of the Wesley team, congratulated them also on their fine exhibition, and the same honours were accorded by the players and spectators. The captains of Tinwald and Wesley teams suitably replied. In conclusion, Mr Gow expressed his own, and the Association’s thanks to the visiting players for their entries, and making the tourney such a great success, and also to the officials responsible for the smooth running that had been experienced during the day.
