Social Gathering.

A social evening was tendered to the visiting harriers by the Timaru Harrier Management Committee in the evening at the Cafe Carlton. The chair was occupied by the Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite).

After the loyal toast had been honoured, the Mayor said it gave him great pleasure to extend a welcome to the visiting harriers, and he hoped that during their short stay in Timaru they would have an enjoyable time. He expressed himself pleased at the good work done by the local harriers in fostering the sport in South Canterbury, and congratulated all in that day's race, as he felt they must have trained very hard to be able to accomplish the long run. He hoped to have the pleasure of meeting them again next year.

The toast of The Officials,” was proposed by the Rev. T. Williams, and replied to by Mr A. Foden. “Donors of Prizes” was proposed by Mr L. Murray, and replied to by Mr c. W. Cameron.

The toast of “The Patron” (Mr OrrWalker), was proposed by Mr Foote. Mr Orr-Walker said the remarks of Mr Foote were very kind. He said his interest in the sport called back his school days, when he used to run with the “hares and hounds,” and any effort to help along the sport would always be a pleasure. He congratulated the winner on his fine performance, as he had watched his progress right through the race; also the others who had run so well, and he hoped they would have success. Mr Orr-Walker then presented the prizes.

The toast of “The Visitors,” was proposed by Mr E. Firkin, senr., and replied to by Mr R. Watson for the Dunedin runners, and Mr Ell for the Christchurch men.

The following artists supplied items —Songs, Mr C. Whitehouse and Mr W. Duff; trombone solo, Mr Campbell; cornet, Mr Milligan.

The evening was brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
