RELIEF FUNDS FOR TIMARU
POSITION OF SINGLE MEN.
STATEMENT BY COMMISSIONER. The Rev. Clyde Carr. M.P.. has received the following communication from Mr G. C. Godfrey, Commissioner of Unemployment:— “Your telegram of the 14th inst.. addressed to the acting-Minister of Employment, has been referred to this office for attention. In reply, I have to inform you that, following on the representations of the Local Unemployment Committee and yourself, urging that additional funds be made available to provide extra i-elief for the Timaru unemployed in the weeks ending 16th and 23rd July, inquiries were immediately made into the matter, and it was found that, although the number of eligible registrations used in the assessment of the allocations for these two weeks totalled 742, the actual number of men for whom provision was required, consequent upon a number of single men having been struck off the register, owing to their failure to accept work offered them, was only 674. In the circumstances, it was not found possible to increase the allocations for Timaru in these weeks. It might be mentioned that in assessing the allocations to Timaru. consideration is given to the conjugal condition and the numbers of dependants of the men on the register; thus it will be seen that any adjustment made in the allocations, would be strictly in conformity with the variations in the numbers of registered men in each of the three categories. I can assure you that future allocations for Timaru will be made on the most liberal basis that the available funds will allow.”
