KAWARAU DAM
GATES CLOSED ON SATURDAY NIGHT. Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, July 10. Keen interest was aroused in the closing of the gates of the Kawarau dam on Saturday night. Word was received from Cromwell this evening that the river had fallen by about three feet in the wider parts, and by a little more in the narrower portions of the gorge. Large numbers of men were engaged prospecting on the river banks throughout to-day, but no substantial finds of gold were reported, and local residents do not seem to be unduly optimistic r arding the result. Unemployed men will, however, be afforded an opportunity to make reasonable wages for a short time.
