BUILDING SUBSIDY
APPLICATIONS IN AUCKLAND. By Telegraph—Press, Association AUCKLAND, July 9. Although the Unemployment Board’s building subsidy offer has been open only oi.u week, nearly 100 applications Jiave been received from those desiring to take advantage of ! it. This is regarded as a most promising start, and there is a good prospect that much work which has long been postponed would now be put in hand, giving employment to many tradesmen. WORKS APPROVED. The chairman of the committee of the allied building industries of Wellington (Mr Seed) states that his committee has received word from the Unemployment Board that several works have already been approved by the Minister of Employment for building operations under the employment subsidy scheme, and that work in some instances has actually been already started. He states that very wide and keen interest is being manifested in the scheme generally, and the indications aiu that it will prove an incentive to a definite improvement in building activity, and will be the means of absorbing considerable numbers of tradesmen and operatives from tile ranks of the unemployed. Gome doubt, however, appears yet to exist in the minds of many people as to the process to be adopted to secure the advantage of the subsidy scheme. The committee of the Allied Building Industries cf Wellington is authorised to state that all that is required in respect of all classes of building renovation or repair work is for the person desiring to proceed with such work under the unemployment subsidy scheme, to fill in the application forms, which are obtainable from postmasters or local of the Labour Department, to secure' the benefit of the sudk>w work requires to be approved before it is started, but works falling under the headings of classes 1 and 2of the schedule, under scheme No. 10, can be dealt with by tl.'j Unemployment Board’s local certifying officers, thus obviating any delay. Applications for the subsidy in respect of larger works falling under the headings in classes*3 to 6. will be forwarded through tDe local certifying officers of the Commissioner of Unemployment for the approval of the Unemployment Board before the work is commenced.
