CYCLING

WAIMATE TO CHRISTCHURCH ROAD RACE. The big cycling event of the year, the annual Waimate-to-Christchurch road race, is to be held on Saturday, October 1. The race will again be organised and controlled by the North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling, and Axemen’s Union, which body controlled the famous Timaru-to-Christchurch road race for nearly 20 years. The course of 115 miles is ideal for a road race, the roads being in splendid order,' mainly concrete and bitumen surface, and with the exception of a few miles between Waimate and Timaru are practically flat. Added importance is given to this year’s race owing to the fact that the Australian Federal Cycling Council has allotted the title of 145 miles Australasian Cycling Championship to the race. Big prize money is again being offered, and, as in the past, the event is expected to draw nominations from all over the. Dominion.
