WEDDING TRAGEDY
TRAGIC SEQUEL TO BALKAN CUSTOM. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph— Copyright BELGRADE, July 8. The old Balkan custom of stealing the bride, resulted in three being killed in the village of Novi Bazar. When a girl marries out of her own village, it is customary for the father of the bridegroom to bring an escort of friends and forcibly abduct the promised bride. Generally the rite partakes of a hilarious character, but this time the peasant father of the bride refused to let his daughter go, so W’ben the bridegroom's friends seized her, the bride's brother prepared an ambush, and intercepted the raiders, killing the bridegroom and two friends, and badly wounding 13 others. The bride was then carried back in triumph.
