RIOTOUS SCENES IN BOMBAY
SHOPS AND STORES LOOTED RIFLE FIRE DISPERSES CROWD United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright CALCUTTA, May 16. Further riotous scenes occurred in Bombay, where Hindu and Moslem mobs looted shops and stores and fired dwellings, mosques and temples, causing damage estimated at thousands of pounds, despite the presence of strong forces of police, who dispersed the crowds on six occasions by rifle fire. A police order has been issued banning the public carrying weapons for a month. The Hindu and Moslem leaders are endeavouring to restore peace. Elaborate police precautions, including trenches, barbed Wire and armed pickets, frustrated a Congress attempt to raid the Government salt depot at Wadala, Bombay. The riots at Bombay became so serious that four armoured cars from Poona and police from other districts were rushed to the city. There was more rioting this morning : 15 were killed and 180 injured. The totals are now 50 dead and 580 injured many seriously. Since Saturday eighteen snops were looted and fired. Hindus were dragged from trams and assaulted. Many sections of the city are completely cut off.
