GERALDINE

THE WEATHER. A further five points of rain were recorded by 9 a.m. yesterday, making a total of 3.21 inches since the weather broke. Conditions were dull and overcast yesterday morning, but bright and fine during the afternoon. CRIBBAGE COMPETITION. The following teams have entered in the Geraldine and District Qribbage Association’s annual competition.: Geraldine Citizens. South End (Geraldine). Geraldine Bowling Club, Oddfellows, Manchester Unity, Orari and Orari Bridge. WAIHI REBEKAH LODGE, At the fortnightly meeting of the Waihi Rebekah Lodge. Noble Grand Sis. M. McCabe presided over a large 1 attendance of officers and members. V.G. Sister J. Bennington extended a welcome to sisters and a brother from Waitea Lodge. She also welcomed Sister Stock back to Lodge after her illness. Two candidates were initiated into the order." One brother was placed on the sick list, and one candidate proposed 'for membership. Correspondence was received from Grand Lodge, an appeal for Bro. Keen, and from the Waitea Lodge inviting members to attend the installation. The social, sick visiting, and finance 1 committees and auditors were appoint- ' ed. The Lodge closed in the usual manner and supper was served. SCHOOL COMMITTEE NOMINATIONS. Twelve nominations have been received for nine members of the Geraldine District High School Committee. The Rev. W. J. Couling was the only member of the retiring Committee who did not offer his services for a further term. Owing to the resignation of Mr J. B. Stewart, who \vas transferred to Feilding, the Committee was one member short since February, it not being considered worth while to fill his place in view of the approaching elections. Barrett with a casserole in recognition of her services to the Lodge, as Past Nobis Grand for a second term. Sister Barrett suitablv replied. Messrs A. McNeil (Senior Inspector) J. Wyn Irwin and C. L. Haslam of the Canterbury Education Board are visiting Geraldine. During their visit the inspectors will deliver an address to the teachers of the Geraldine district. WOMEN’S INSTITUTES. The annual meeting of the Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes will be held to-day, when delegates will be present from Institutes within the area from Rakaia to Waimate. Since the last half-yearly conference a North Canterbury Federation has been formed, and North Canterbury, Bank’s Peninsula, and the West Coast now comprise the northern Federation, and will not attend today’s meeting'. Fostering Dominion Industries. The Women’s Institutes of New Zealand have been working to assist the trade campaign since its inception, and ore now sponsoring a butter drive in England. Scotland and Wales. The Dairy Board has written promising assistance. The Women’s Institutes’ practice of corresponding with overseas “links” is to be utilised, and in May each New Zealand Institute will supply the name or address of its “link” and sufficient money to cover the cost of the butter to be sent, and the -Dairy Board will arrange for its delivery. Many households at Home will thus make the acquaintance of New Zealand butter and, it is hoped, purchase it in future. MUNICIPAL THEATRE. “A Connecticut Yankee at the Court of King Aruthur,” will be screened at the Municipal Theatre again this evening. Will Rogers, who plays the title role, presents many amusing incidents. His arrival at Court is not welcomed . by the Knights of King Arthur’s Round Table, and finally, Sir Sagramor, who is jealous of Rogers’ popularity, challenges him to joust in the big tournament. Rogers then becomes the unwilling hero who is to rescue Princess Alisande from the wicked Queen Morgan Le Fay and there follows a series of mirth-provoking incidents. His supporting cast includes Maureen O’Sullivan, Frank Albertson, Myma Loy, William Farnum, Mitchell Harris and Brandon Hurst. Good supports will also be screened. John R. Procter, Ltd., representative will be making one of his usual visits to Geraldine on Wednesday, 27th April. Appointments can be made now by 'phoning Mr Morris-Williams
