Wai-iti Road, returned on Friday from a visit to Han - mer. Mrs Elvidge, who was staying at Beverley House, has returned to Dunedin. Miss Loo Cartwright, Orbell Street, returned yesterday from a visit to Mrs Leonard Webb, Invercargill. Mrs Spencer Brent and Miss Lowes. Dunedin, are staying at Beverley House Wai-iti Road. Mrs W. H. Walton and Miss Dorothy Walton. Park Lane, spent the weekend with Mrs J. Page, Mt. Gerald. Miss Monica Cocks, Christchurch, will arrive to-day to stay with Mrs W. H. Helmore, “Kiromiko,” Wai-iti Road. Mrs A. Grant, “Aigantighe,” Wai-iti Road, has returned from a visit to the Misses Banks, Oamaru. Mrs Geoffrey Curtis, Christchurch, is staying with her grandmother, Mrs W. Priest, Bank Street. Miss Yonge, Auckland, who has been staying With Mrs F. G. M. Raymond, Wai-iti Avenue, has left for Christchurch. Mrs Marshall and Miss Marjorie Marshall, Orbell Street, have returned home after spending some months in Auckland. Mrs G. Murray. Miss Betty Murray. Braemar. and Mr and Mrs Gerald Murray, Glenmore. Mackenzie Country, have returned from a visit to the Franz Josef Glacier. The engagement is announced of Mary, second daughter of Mr and Mrs J. P. McQuilkin, “Bushy Park,” Eiffelton, to John Leonard, second son of Mr Jeremiah Connolly and the late Mrs Connolly, “Langley,” Rakaia. The engagement is announced of Lena Alice, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Messervy of New Brighton, to Arthur William, only son of Mr and Mrs A. Slade, of Waimate. Talking of fashions, I would like to give you some idea of the prevailing effect at one of London's smartest musical gatherings at the Queen’s Hall, to hear one of the Courtauld-Sargent series of concerts with Schnabel as pianist says a writer in the “Free Lance.” The women were dressed impeccably, though very quietly. The general trend was to dark tones and streamlines in gowns, and short hair with the large loose wave or quite straight. In my party was a wellknown authoress, a young and rising man journalist and one of the most eminent of our English younger scientists. Subsequently, while we supped at a very much in the fashion German restaurant off Tottenham Court Road, we discussed smoking among men and women, and it transpired that the woman novelist smoked cigarettes, but liked cigars; the professor of science smoked cigarettes but did not like pipes; the young journalist always smoked cigarettes, and the remaining guest—myself—confessed to a sturdy pipe and Empire shag when working. And this brings me to my present point: that more and more women are going “on the water cart”; tomato cocktail is becoming increasingly chic (and very good it is), and many women who follow literary avocations are .taking to pipes and cigars and eschewing the endless cheap cigarettes of the younger males.
