ROBBING WITH VIOLENCE

BOOKMAKER THE VICTIM. By Teleeraph—Press Association PALMERSTON N.. April 8. Arising from an assault and robbery in which Charles Joseph Williams was the victim, on March 31, John Schumacher, labourer (25) and Frederick Murray, plasterer (35), appeared at Court this morning, and pleaded guilty to the charge of robbery with violence, the sum involved being £53. Sydney Sellwood, plasterer (43), pleaded guilty to receiving from Schumacher £l4, knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. Williams gave evidence on the lines previously telegraphed. Detective Jarrold said a statement was made by Schumacher, who said he met Murray at Palmerston North, being introduced by Sellwood. Murray had said that he knew a bookmaker here, and if they went the right way about it they could get a few hundred pounds off him. Later Murray and Schumacher planned to waylay Williams, who, however, had only £53. Schumacher and Murray carried out the robbery, Sellwood having nothing to do with this plan. Later they separated and arranged to meet in Wellington. The money was divided between the three. Murray admitted that he was out of prison only three weeks. He had been sentenced to two years for theft. All the accused were committed for sentence to the Supreme Court.
