THE PART OF THE TEACHER
“The teacher, to my mind, is the greatest factor of the future, greater even, I regret to say in many hundreds of thousands of cases, than the parents themselves. More than the parent or the parson you have in your hands the moulding of the character of the citizens who will solve the problems of to-day, for the problems of to-day cannot be solved by us. We are only hacking a way through the tangle of national and international racial hatreds and prejudice. It is the next generation which will take the final steps to create a better world and a more humane humanity. This country with all its faults still, in my judgment, leads the world, and its social reforms, and, on the whole, its wise and tolerant leadership of mankind scattered over this globe have depended not only upon the product of the great public schools and universities, but upon the steady humanitarian outlook of the boys and girls from the elementary schools.” —Sir Donald McLean, President of the British Board of Education.
